A year ago I knew nothing of Rotary or E-Clubs, but I do like a good game of Pickle Ball and so does Bruce Kleeberger. I have played a lot of Pickle Ball with a lot of people, but none have had the profound impact on me like Bruce has. In a short order of time, Bruce began to tell me about Rotary and the E-club. Since I was a retired Information Technology person, the whole idea of an E-club and the technology behind it all intrigued me to say the least, and when he said he really needed a webmaster for the sclub website, that interested me even more.
Fast forward 6 to 8 months, and here I am, I have learned a lot about Rotary, learned a lot about E-clubs, and had a few interesting challenges to tackle. Best of all I got to meet a lot of interesting people from all over Canada and the world because of it.
Thank you to all of you. Enjoy this meeting.

As many as 150 children of varying grades are taking the computer classes in Chacarita, a small isolated rural community of 600.
Grades 1,2 and 3 study Microsoft Word and grades 4,5,6 study Excel. Without the support of Rotary and the Rotary E-club of Canada One, this would not be happening. Rotary built the classroom and provides the salary of the teacher (Elizabeth), who moved into this small community, allowing her to be at the school all day.
Reports indicate, that all studies are of interest to the student. They study regular classes half of the day and computers the other half when they would normally be at home. There are two cycles each day at the school.
Finding a teacher qualified and able to teach in this remote location where of a population of 600, 50% is illiterate and most adults have no more than grade 1 or 2 education, is a challenge. Very few go beyond grade 6.  The only grade 12 graduate from the community was the one who asked Rotary to help.

Ever wonder why the Rotary year begins 1 July? The international convention initially played a key role in determining the start date of our fiscal and administrative year.
Rotary's first fiscal year began the day after the first convention ended, on 18 August 1910. The 1911-12 fiscal year also related to the convention, beginning with the first day of the 1911 convention on 21 August.

What will your generation be the last to see?
When Rotary set out to end polio more than 25 years ago, there were over 350,000 cases of this crippling disease every year. Children in 125 countries lost their ability to run, walk, and play -- forever. Since then, we’ve eradicated 99 percent of this devastating disease. The end is so close we can see it. Our generation will be the last to see the crippling effects of polio. What else will your generation be the last to see?

Food for Thought
“So long as we love we serve; so long as we are loved by others, I would almost say that we are indispensable; and no man is useless while he has a friend.”
