Rotarians from as far south as Yakima, Washington and from way up north, Cache Creek and Kamloops, BC, traveled to Osoyoos for their annular District Training on Friday and Saturday , October 30-31, and I was very fortunate to be part of this.
Since our move to the South Okanagan, the Rotary Club of Osoyoos has graciously adopted me. I chuckle when my name is no longer read as a visiting Rotarian; This is home. Well, at least for the summer months.
I hardly miss any of their Thursday Noon meetings, listening to some great speakers, taking part in various community projects, and making new friends.
When I was asked to assist in registration for the District Training I gladly accepted and felt very welcomed by the leaders of this District.
As any E-club member would do, I brought along a stack of E-club promotional cards, placed them on the tables, and  took advantage of the opportunity to speak about the benefits of an E-club.
It is quite interesting to learn that many Rotarians are still unaware of Rotary e-clubs; I was approached with lots of questions.
Each e-clubber has the same opportunity to promote our e-club in their area. I encourage our readers (including visiting guests) to invite Rotarians and non Rotarians to our website.
Enjoy this week's meeting...... and don't forget to pass along a link to our website.

Inspirational Moment

For your 103rd birthday, you should get to do what you want and for Mary Cotter from Montclair, California that meant volunteering at her local senior center -- dressed as Wonder Woman! For 25 years, Cotter has been serving coffee and tea at the Monclair Seniors Center, so when her friends presented her with the Wonder Woman outfit for her birthday this week, she put it on and went straight back to work.
The centenarian still lives alone and drives to and from the center five days a week to volunteer her time. "They call me the barmaid because I'm serving drinks," she jokes. She says that the secret to her longevity is to "just keep moving."

Do Schools Kill Creativity? | Sir Ken Robinson | TED Talks
I found the speaker's presentation entertaining and relevant. Having two kids attending high school it is important that they participate in creative activities such as dance class as well as working on their own in such things as learning to sew and to create art.
I would go even further to suggest that being creative, while not necessarily leading to a career in the end, enhances "thinking" skills...it aids in developing "critical thinking" . Whether dance, art, music, history, literature, etc.
It reminds me when I was studying at a polytechnic university taking a philosophy elective (we all had to)  discussing an exam question that centred around our personal opinion and interpretation of the material. A fellow student asked after great debate, "but what is the "right" answer. Not all things we will deal with will be able to be added up in columns.

Very insightful. It's nice to not only hear the other perspectives about community/cultural "worth", and how those are or should be measured in our society, but also to see how some are changing their views and procedures. Very refreshing and encouraging.
Ned Morris, RC of Walla Walla (Noon), D-5080

I absolutely loved the Ted Talk by Chip Conley! It's absolutely true that we are very focused on wealth and status being the determining factors of success and happiness, rather than the things we have done or the experiences which have made us smile. Perhaps we should not be focused on the pursuit of happiness but happiness in the pursuit? Excellent video.
Rashmani Chakrabarty, Rotary E-Club of Canada One, D-5370

I enjoyed the parallel of advice from the maid and the president.  We far too often forget that happiness is more important than money.

Food for Thought

At the end of life we will not be judged by how many diplomas we have received, how much money we have made, how many great things we have done.
We will be judged by "I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless, and you took me in."
