Greeter this week: David Werrett

Greetings to members and guests.
Not long after I joined Rotary in 1993 I was given some Rotary publications, one of which was the ABC's of Rotary.  The articles in the book were originally a column in the weekly bulletin of the North Stockton Club in California. The author of these articles was Cliff Dochterman who went on to become RI President in1992-93.  These articles covered many topics about RI and clubs but one of them is particularly relevant as the District Governor will be addressing our club at the club assembly in September.
Past RI President Cliff Dochterman wrote that the District Governor performs a very significant function in the world of Rotary.  He or she is the single officer of Rotary International in the district.  The district governors, who have been extensively trained at the International Assembly and regionally at the governors-elect training seminar, provide guidance and leadership to the clubs in their district and are responsible for maintaining the high performance of the clubs in their district.
Please make a note on your calendar to attend our Club Assembly at 9am Mountain Time on Saturday, September 9 and listen to the messages from our District Governor Frank Reitz and Assistant Area Governor Marilyn Mucha.

Visitors always welcome!

Comments from our Guests and Members
Members and guest attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring and entertaining weekly meetings.
Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you send us your comments please?

I have seen the homeless in Hawaii, but was unaware of the seriousness of the problem. Hopefully the solution outlined in this program will help. I have attended a concert for homeless people when I was there, so I know people are trying to help.

I thought the TED Talk was a good one.  I'm often perceived as being someone who gives a lot back and helps others; however, it is important for me to remember that I must also make time for myself.  In order for me to be of value to others, I must be able to function well and fulfill my commitments.  This requires me to not just manage my time (which I do well) but also manage my energy (which I do not yet do well). The term given for this is that I must to be more a Matcher.
As a project manager, it is important that the team also have a diversity of Takers/Givers.  Too many givers will frustrate takers, and too many takers will push the givers out.  A balance is needed.

Christopher Harper, Calgary, Alberta

I had no idea of the extent of homelessness now in Hawaii...jaw-dropping amidst such levels of affluence & beauty. No wonder it's a storm brewing that needs careful & concise attention now. Go Rotary, Go!
Velma Noble, RCCHP, D-5360

News from our Rotary Family

Lou Spizzirri has been busy with a new house. Renovations of kitchen, and the yard.
This year, he wrote us, "I got to have a small vegetable garden and for the first time in 7 years I enjoyed my homegrown tomatoes and lettuce.
I was encouraged to become the Entertainment Director of the Sarnia Yacht Club (SYC). The SYC position means that weekly I have to do things to make the place hum.
Tuesday nights (the same time that Rotary e-club has its FA meetings), is rehearsal night for the SYC band, of which I'm a member.  This conflict has been going on for some time and it conflicts with attending the e-club meetings.

The second week of August I'm off to Ketchikan Alaska. There I will board a 44 foot sail boat and sail along the British Colombia coast to Vancouver Island and to Comox. This may take a month, after that a visit to Revelstoke, BC to see my daughter Maggie. Maggie is the President this year of the Revelstoke Rotary Club.
Perhaps I'll be more proactive with Rotary when I slow down a bit.
Wishing you all well."
Cheers
Lou

An Underage Weasel Walks into a Bar
The bartender says, "I'm sorry. I can't serve underage weasels."
The weasel says, "That's fine. I don't need something alcoholic. What else do you have?"
The bartender says "Oh, we have lots! We have water, pop, tea, coffee, smoothies. What would you like?"
"Pop," goes the weasel.

Plants 'hijacked' to make polio vaccine
Plants have been "hijacked" to make polio vaccine in a breakthrough with the potential to transform vaccine manufacture, say scientists.
The team at the John Innes Centre, in Norfolk, says the process is cheap, easy and quick.
As well as helping eliminate polio, the scientists believe their approach could help the world react to unexpected threats such as Zika virus or Ebola.

United Kingdom pledges $130 million for polio eradication
The United Kingdom pledged $130 million on Friday toward the fight to eradicate polio. The contribution will help fund immunizations of 45 million children a year through 2020. In June, at the Rotary Convention in Atlanta, Georgia, global leaders pledged $1.2 billion of the estimated $1.5 billion required to end polio. However, Rotary's work continues. We're now working to raise $50 million a year and to ensure that global leaders make good on this summer's pledges.

Food for Thought

"When one door closes another door opens, but we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us."

Rotary Jukebox
For a small donation, your favorite musician will be featured on one of our next e-meetings for everyone to enjoy.
Every week we'll have a draw and the lucky person will see their song featured!

"Natalie is a beloved piano player in Melbourne who has created this original masterpiece that is stunningly beautiful to listen to. Her music is breathtaking, but the story of her life is marked with much sadness. Her husband left her, she lost two children, and she was at one time homeless. Many times in life great beauty comes from great sadness. Her music tells that story."
