Greeter this week: Delwen Stander
In the Wachowski brothers' sci-fi movie, Jupiter Rising, the great dynastic families in the universe compete for the most valuable commodity they know of - time.  Time is precious, and is coveted above all else. With more time, one accomplishes more.  When we have leisure time, we can think more, learn more, and expand our minds.  Those who live longer invariably achieve more, and experience more.
Time's value was brought home to me quite clearly recently, when my wife was injured in a home accident.  For now, most of her activities of daily living take much longer, and involve my assistance.  As a result, we have far less time, and we notice that our quality of life has suffered.  Good health, and the time it creates, should never be taken for granted.
In a way, we in Rotary, in so many projects, are in the business of buying time for those who desperately need it.  When we provide a wheelchair to a Mexican teenager, suddenly his journey across a village is a matter of minutes, not hours of waiting to be carried, and he can attend school.  When we fund a cleft palate surgery for a Chinese infant, her parenting involves less care for the deformity, and more available time to provide nutrition and positive stimulation.  And when we place those 2 drops of vaccine on a little Indian baby's tongue, we are guaranteeing that he will have a longer life, free of a crippling disability, and full of the promise of possibility.
Remember this week, as you make your club and Foundation donations, that you are giving some precious time to those who need it most.

Canadiana

This past May, Montreal inventor Catalin Alexandru Duru broke the world record for the longest hoverboard flight.
Duru flew up to five metres above a lake for a distance of 275.9 metres aboard his homemade, propeller-powered hoverboard in a trip that lasted more than 11/2 minutes.
Now, the 31-year-old Duru and his company, Omni Hoverboards, are working on a secret, next-generation version of the device. Watch as he takes CBC's Reg Sherren into the workshop where he is building it, and then to a Quebec lake where he puts the new prototype to the test for the first time.

Comments from our Guests and Members

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you send us your comments please?

As the Founder of the fellowship of Canoeing Rotarians, I was delighted to see your National Film Board piece on the voyageurs. Canoe tripping today is soft adventure compared to the trial and tribulations of those who open our country to trade and pioneering.
John Eberhard, RC of London, D-6330

I enjoyed the Canadiana presentation about the fighter pilot.  As a member of the Legion I think remembering our military history is so important.
Lisa Smith, RC of Stony Plain, D-5370

A humorous look into the future through education! What will the world look like in 5 years, we don't know but we educate our children. A talk about education and creativity. Excellent!
San Theocharis, RC of Festival City, D-6330

Nicholas has made some profound predictions over the last 30 years. One of his famous ones that was disputed was that in 1995 we would be able to buy books and read newspapers over the internet.
Michael Thomas, RC of Stony Plain, D-5370

You always have something new to share with visitors.  I love the Canadiana!
Nosberto Lou, RC of Guatemala North, D-4250

Why did You Join Rotary?
Jennifer Jacobson, a police constable in Chatham-Kent, Ontario, Canada, took part in a Rotary-sponsored Group Study Exchange (GSE) to Japan in 2009 after reading a post by a colleague and former participant.
"It was a life-changing experience, absolutely fantastic," says Jacobson, who joined a physical therapist, a music therapist, and a retail manager on the trip. "Because they had limited translators, we went everywhere together and learned about each other's professions. Our Japanese hosts made sure we experienced everything.
