Greeter this week: Rob Boyden, Rotary Club of Canmore

Image
It is my pleasure to serve as the greater for this week’s meeting of the Rotary E-Club of Canada One and I welcome you to the meeting.
I was asked to join Rotary in 1989 as a member of the Rotary Club of Calgary South and had the privilege of serving as the President of that club 2009 – 2010. With my retirement from my career in Calgary in 2011, I transferred my membership to the Rotary Club of Canmore. Rotary has been a wonderful part of my life for 24 years and has provided not only the opportunity to give something back to our local, national, and international community, but also the opportunity to meet hundreds of other Rotarians in many countries of the world. I think my most significant and memorable experience in Rotary was to participate with 42 other Rotarians and friends in helping raise over $150,000 to contribute to the Sir Edmund Hillary Foundation to complete the construction of a high school in the Solu Kimbu region of Nepal and to accompany 25 of those great people in trekking to the base camp at Mount Everest.

Attending make ups at other clubs to maintain my attendance has provided me the opportunity to learn much about the world of Rotary and the projects undertaken to help make our world a better place for all. The Rotary E-Club of Canada One has allowed me to continue my participation in Rotary while my wife and I winter near a small town in Mexico where there is no club.

Welcome to Rotary. It is my pleasure to greet you. Sit back, enjoy the program, and come back and join us again

Let’s hear from our Guests and Members
Each week we receive comments from guests and Prospective members, who attend our e-meetings. We like to share some of these comments with you.

Very interesting insight into The Trendalyzer Google software. Very informative and a very entertaining presenter. Great mix of presentation of solid data seasoned with a dash of humour. Holds your attention.”
James Prizeman, RC Olds, AB – D5360

Dr Eric Topol video was very interesting. This technology could help in remote areas or areas that have limited doctors. It may even help alleviate the demand and visits that put a demand on doctors.
The video about Tim Harris was awesome. It is wonderful that he has supportive parents that encouraged him to go for his dreams. Hugs are sometimes better than food.
I sell Close To My Heart and they raise money for Operation Smile, which is similar to Alliance for Smiles. I donate every order. I think that seeing your child with a beautiful smile is awesome and brings a smile to a parents face. A child's smile and laughter is contagious. Thank you for such an inspirational meeting
”. Kary Hammel, RC Kindersly, D5360

Every single part of this meeting was superb. Dr. Topol’s technology of the future is here right now with the Smart phone medicine. WOW!!”
Ramiro Contreras – Charter Member

I like all the different activities in each meeting, and the fact that it takes half an hour to get through”.
Jeffrey Barrett, RC Catskill – D7210

A message from The Honourable Rona Ambrose, PC, MP
ImageAs Regional Minister for Northern Alberta and Member of Parliament for Edmonton-Spruce Grove, I would like to commend the founders of Canada's first  on line Rotary club - the Rotary E-Club of Canada One.

I am proud to say that Rotary E-Club of Canada One, was developed right here in Rotary District 5370 of Edmonton, Alberta, and encompasses my constituency of Edmonton-Spruce Grove.

I would like to salute the strong leadership of our fellow Edmonton-Spruce Grove constituent, Elly Contreras, and her co-founders for the foresight and initiative to facilitate live online participation of Rotarians from Canada and beyond.

Historic Moments in Rotary

On 23 February 1905, Paul P. Harris, Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, and Hiram E. Shorey gathered in Loehr’s office for what would become known as the first Rotary club meeting.

Harris’s desire for camaraderie among business associates brought together these four men and eventually led to an international organization of service and fellowship.

Read about each of the first four Rotarians and about Harry L. Ruggles, who is often called the "fifth Rotarian."

Food for Thought
Life may not always turn out to be the party we had hoped for, but while living it, why not take the time to, at least dance.

Speaker Program
Stroke of Insight
Jill Bolte Taylor got a research opportunity few brain scientists would wish for: She had a massive stroke, and watched as her brain functions -- motion, speech, self-awareness -- shut down one by one. An astonishing story.
Brain researcher Jill Bolte Taylor studied her own stroke as it happened -- and has become a powerful voice for brain recovery.
