Greeter this week: Delwen Stander

My wife and I had our 30th anniversary recently, and we enjoyed a wonderful road trip from our home in Chilliwack down to our place in Palm Springs, stopping along the way to smell the roses, drink the wine, and take in the scenery of 5 states.  It made me think that Rotary is like a long road trip.  “Why?”, you ask.
Well, like any journey, there is a “starting point”.  For Rotarians, this is usually induction into a club.  This is a critical moment.  When you embark on a path of commitment to service above self, you must begin with appropriate preparation, knowledge, and an idea of where you are going.  By studying your “maps” (like the Rotary library), and talking to experienced members, you will not lose your way.
Then there are the “places” you will visit or pass through on the road.  For us, these are the people you will meet, the projects you will be involved in, the meetings and conferences you will attend, and the other experiences you will have in your Rotary days.  These are what make the trip worthwhile.  They will shape you, and provide you with the” snapshots” and memories that you will always cherish.
Finally, there is the destination.  Some, at first, may think they know where this is, and their goal is to get there – becoming a Paul Harris Fellow, being a Benefactor, going on an service trip, etc.  For most in Rotary, however, these are just milestones, and the end point is really much further away - a better, more peaceful world.
While we’re on this long road together, let’s remember to enjoy our fellow travelers and all the “roses” we get to smell.
Delwen

Definition of Rotary

How do you describe the organization called "Rotary"? There are so many characteristics of a Rotary club as
well as the activities of a million Rotarians. There are the features of service, internationality, fellowship,
classifications of each vocation, development of goodwill and world understanding, the emphasis of high
ethical standards, concern for other people and many more.

In 1976 the Rotary International Board of Directors was interested in creating a concise definition of the
fundamental aspects of Rotary. They turned to the three men who were then serving on Rotary's Public
Relations Committee and requested that a one-sentence definition of Rotary be prepared. After numerous
drafts, the committee presented this definition, which has been used ever since in various Rotary publications:
"Rotary is an organization of business and professional persons united worldwide who provide humanitarian
service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build goodwill and peace in the world.'
Those 31 words are worth remembering when someone asks, "What is a Rotary club?"
