Greeter this week: Undine Miller

The Dolly Parton's Imagination Library was founded in 2001 by Dolly Parton herself. This non-profit, early childhood literacy program is set up in North-America, the UK and New Zealand, with 1,136,170 registered children, and growing.
Studies such as the M.D.R. Evans et al have concluded that "Children growing up in homes with many books get 3 years more schooling than children from bookless homes, independent of parents' education occupation, and class".
Children participating in the DPIL program have shown to score higher in their literacy scores than the students who were not registered in DPIL. A study in 2007 by the Learning to Grow Project of the University of Hawaii revealed that due to the program, 30% more families were actively reading daily.
In the Dolly Parton's Imagination Library program the children are registered by their parents from 0-5 years old to receive culturally relevant books each month by mail. Each community (by postal code) usually has a Community Champion who is the main contact for the parents and for DPIL. Rotary International is a valued partner of DPIL, and Rotary E-Club Canada One has 9 approved affiliates that we are supporting: Aklavik, Ft McPherson, Ft Resolution, Inuvik, Paulatuk, Sachs Harbour, Tsiigehtchic, Tuktoyaktuk, and Ulukhaktok. When I printed a map of this region to get a better picture of where these communities are located at, I realized that except for Ft Resolution, all others were located above the Arctic Circle!
Needless to say, organizations like Dolly Parton Imagination Library rely heavily on donations which can either be mailed to The Dollywood Foundation, 111 Dollywood Lane Pigeon Forge, TN 37863, or directly at www.imaginationlibrary.com, merchandise & donations. There you are also able to donate to a local affiliate by specifying one of the nine mentioned above.
As an additional contact method, I have created a Facebook page www.facebook.com/EClubOneDPILNT/ where I am hoping to keep in touch and share stories and pictures relevant to this wonderful cause.

Comments from our Guests and Members
Members and guest attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring and entertaining weekly meetings.
Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you send us your comments please?

It was interesting to see the model that the speaker developed to manage fears.  It reminds me of the concept that often the worst-case scenario is not likely and/or can be managed.

Tim Ferriss is a very analytical guy. Far too analytical for guy with ADHD like me. I have measured choices of actions in only 2 ways: The risk of doing something vs. the risk of not doing it.
Jean Michel Crepin, Rotary E-Club of Canada One, D-5370

I did the meeting for Jan. 22 -28, and watched the very interesting program on brain foods.  Needless to say, my wife, watching with me, kept nodding her head and saying "See!" , as she has us on the very diet which the good doctor recommended.
Delwen Stander, Rotary E-Club of Canada One, D-5370

Fantastic meeting challenging all Rotarians to be the Inspiration for sustainable change in Rotary's 6 areas of focus in our world, community and in ourselves.
Lynne Ternosky, Rotary E-Club of Canada One, D-5370
