Welcome to this weeks meeting of
The Rotary e Club Canada One
Need to make up meeting?
Welcome to Rotary On-line!  This message comes to you from our new summer location near Droston, AB, where  Barb and I continue to live in our motorhome. We have a great place to park, at the site of the old farm house where Barb grew up.
A few weeks ago, we had the privilege of spending a wonderful evening at the Ballet Folkloric dance presentation In Leduc. These very talented young people put on an amazing evening of song and dance that depicts some of the history and culture of Mexico. The troop consists of about 20 performers who range in age from 11 to 22 years. They are all in school or university programs and must maintain a grade point average above 8.0 to stay on the touring company. The Danzas Manzanillo originated at the Casa Hogar Los Angelitos (CHLA) children's home in Manzanillo. The majority of the performers are from CHLA. The home opens it's doors to the many poverty stricken children from the area, who are given a chance to partake in this program.
They toured Alberta for 10 days and performed in Calgary, Canmore, Olds, Edmonton and Leduc. The cost of this trip was covered by sponsorship from several Alberta Rotary clubs and other associations and individuals that have winter connections to Manzanillo. Our evening was sponsored by my former club, Nisku-Leduc Rotary Club, and was almost a sell out (they were competing with a $358,000.00 50/50 draw at the Eskimo football game ).
Casa Hogar is a children's home with a difference. They do not just feed and house the children, they give them love and a chance to succeed! CHLA is very close to our hearts and if anyone would like more information on how you can help this program to continue and expand, please contact me at any time.
Enjoy the meeting to follow!

Comments from our Guests and Members
“Living in South Africa I was not aware of the hardships faced by the Canadian people. It is something I will surely share with my fellow South Africans”.
Johann van der Westhuizen, RC Tamapta – D9400

“The Tuk Elders’ lives from the '40s including early married life and reindeer herding are remarkable and hold interesting lessons in part for today's families and communities. I appreciate this opportunity to visit a community in my country with whom I share much in common but yet have so many differences.”
Rita-Marie Hadley, RC Brantford – D7090

“Some of the important aspects of Rotary were well presented in this meeting.”
Archie Skirving, R E-club Canada One

“The piece on hungry kids in Syria brought it home that there is no end to the work of Rotary. We must never become complacent about one huge, yet small victory.”
Chris Langley, R E-club Canada One

Rotary provided these computers to students in a School in El Salvador. Most students were girls, allowing them to develop skills for the future. Later the youth taught many teachers how to use the computers.
This photo was taken in Chalchaupa, El Salvador.

A Little Humor

Siamese twin men walk into a bar in Canada and park themselves on a bar stool.
One of them says to the bartender, "Don't mind us; we're joined at the hip. I'm John, he's Jim. Two Molson Canadian beers, please."
The bartender, feeling slightly awkward, tries to make polite conversation while pouring the beers. "Been on holiday yet, guys?"
"Off to England next month," says John. "We go to England every year, rent a car and drive for miles. Don't we, Jim?"
Jim agrees.

"Ah, England!" says the bartender. "Wonderful country... the history, the beer, the culture..."
"Nah, we don't like that British baloney," says John. "Hamburgers and Molson's beer, that's us, eh Jim? And we can't stand the English food and their warm beer. Plus they're so arrogant and rude to the colonials."
"So why keep going to England?" asks the bartender.

"It's the only chance Jim gets to drive."

New Members Corner
August is membership and extension month.
Membership should be the focus of any club at all times; It is one of the most challenging as well as exciting aspects of Rotary.  The induction of new members, and a solid retention program is a measure of how Rotary is perceived by the communities in which it serves.
A solid Membership program is crucial to any club that not only sustains but also expand its membership. Clubs that are able to engage their entire membership in the various projects make their members feel valued and involved.  Once all members feel good about their own club and its activities it creates interest to potential new members.
Next time you talk to a colleague, friend or family members, talk about the benefits of being a Rotarian and make it one of your regular activities.

The webinar, entitled Getting & Keeping Members Engaged: Strategies for Rotary District Leaders, I attended, was attended mostly by zone leaders, from Districts particularly. The webinar was a very professional presentation. Our District was well represented and our honourary member Al Bergsma was a panelist.
Attracting new members is an issue for Rotary Clubs but even more, retention is key. Engagement is key to retention.
The District Engagement subcommittee is an important resource. As is our AG.
Ideas such as supporting members to attend Leadership seminars, rewarding members for engagement, having a written District and club engagement plans. Setting goals, using Rotary Club Central and have measurable objectives. Rewards for reaching or exceeding the goals.
Give AG's the responsibility for providing training, incentives to clubs and for following up.
www.rotary.org has an "Engagement" page as well as a "Membership" page. Innovative membership ideas are available through webinars at Zone levels and some Districts.
Some engagement strategies Districts have found effective were to be discussed at the end of the webinar.
* Exit polls
* Phone call follow up with departing Rotarians
* Written plan on Rotary Club Central
* Promote club successes at club assemblies to increase engagement
* Accessing Rotary Club Central is limited to certain club leaders, could be better if it was open to other club members.

Rotary Minute
Rotary members in California, USA, have been working with Hands of Peace to break down barriers and build dialogue between students from Israel, Palestine, and the United States. Kelly Mellos, an artist who uses her workshop to teach the visiting students trust and compassion, writes a powerful and timely post about the experience in Rotary Voices.

Food for Thought
How much money will it take to make you happy?
Did you know that after $75,000/year, money has little effect on our happiness? That’s right. People in the U.S. who make $75,000 are just as happy as those who make $150,000. Money really doesn’t buy happiness after all.
