When I return to the U.K. to visit family in Wales I always like to go to a meeting of my late brother's Rotary club, the Rotary Club of Narberth and Whitland. It is a very vibrant and active Cub and recently I had been reading tweets by Social Media Director (and Past President) Mary Adams about "Rotakids", which interested me. So at the meeting I attended I asked Mary about Rotakids and their activities.
She told me that through connections with parents and teachers the Club has Rotakids operating in two local schools; the children involved are 7 to 12 years old. One of the things they do is meet with people in the community with Long Term Health needs, particularly those suffering early forms of dementia and cancer. They interact with the group in several ways, one is by playing board games such as "Snakes and Ladders". This is beneficial for both children and the people who attend the group who have become socially inactive, the carers report that they seem to be more attentive and responsive when they are amongst the children.
In a completely different form of contributing to society, at one school the children collected used flip flops which were then sent to East Africa to help prevent the disease jiggers, which occurs when the children sleep on hessian sacks on the floor and the insects eat into their feet and lay eggs causing deformities. The flip flops create a barrier preventing the insects entering the feet. The Rotakids become more Globally aware of life in Africa with this great twinning scheme. It also teaches them how little the children have in Africa and some great videos have been exchanged.
The Rotakids have also planted 5000 Crocus at the school entrance in the Purple for Polio scheme to raise awareness of the eradication of Polio worldwide and have participated in the Rotary Shoe Boxes scheme at Christmas to send gifts to less fortunate families in Europe. These Rotakids have embraced Rotary Principles and have truly become great Global Citizens.
Mary told me that she hopes by involving these younger children they will start to become community minded and go on to join Interact and that her work will result in future Rotarians, to help ensure the future of Rotary.
Wonderful to see how forward looking these Rotarians are.

Inspirational Moment

Kenyan Woman Saves 15,000 Young Girls From Female Genital Mutilation
Nice Nailantei Leng'ete was recently named one of Time's Most Influential People, and for good reason. The 27-year-old Kenyan has made it her life's work to help young African girls escape "female cutting," commonly referred to as female genital mutilation (FGM). While discussing her mission with Yahoo Lifestyle, Leng'ete explained the cause is close to her heart because she escaped the archaic practice herself at 8 years old.

Comments from our Guests and Members
Members and guest attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring and entertaining weekly meetings.
Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you send us your comments please?

So happy to know that Sharon was able to go to Toronto. All Rotarians should have that experience at least once, to get a better understanding of the "international" of Rotary. With the e-meetings we learn about Rotary but also about our Canada.
Elly Contreras, Rotary E-Club of Canada One, D-5370

Today we saw the real spirit of an e-club when one of our members was camping with his family in the woods of Ontario, and he attended our Fellowship Assembly.
Jean-Michel Crepin, Rotary E-Club of Canada One, D-5370

With the topic being the discoveries awaiting us in the Ocean's Twilight Zone - it was fascinating to learn about how much we do not know about the many species we have yet to discover.  We also do not know what they are eating and how this all affects Global Warming.
Betty Ann Lewis, RC of Barrie, Ontario, D-7010

Learning from a transgender person was valuable.  The most important thing was to look behind the label, and treat all people as people.  That is what I would want to share with everyone.
Tami Muhlert, Kal Rotary, D-5060

A Little Humour

New Members Corner

For more than 110 years, Rotary members have been addressing challenges around the world.
Grassroots at the core, Rotary links 1.2 million members to form an organization of international scope. It started with the vision of one man - Paul Harris. The Chicago attorney formed the Rotary Club of Chicago on 23 February 1905, so professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas, form meaningful, lifelong friendships, and give back to their communities.

"There are two types of people who will tell you that you cannot make a difference in this world: those who are afraid to try and those who are afraid you will succeed."
