Greeter this week: Frank Yakimchuk

I would encourage Rotarians to visit other Rotary Clubs when they travel within Canada or those fortunate to travel to other Countries. I tell the story of my discovery of a Rotarian who was born in Russia and lived in southern Spain, he made a very good living selling real-estate mostly to foreign visitors.
I made an arrangement to meet him at the front door of my hotel the next day, he arrived in a beautiful 2 door Mercedes Convertible with the top down. After a short drive down the coastal highway we arrived at a beautiful hotel complex on the ocean.
The District Governor was there with his wife, there was a small crowd in attendance. Business was the order of the day, they asked me to address those present, I talked about my Club in Halifax, NS, Canada.
I cherish that visit to Spain and the chance to visit with fellow Rotarians. You too can make this happen on your next journey away.
(The picture is the area where I stayed back in the late 90's,  Torremolinos in Southern Spain.)

Comments from our Guests and Members
Members and guest attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring and entertaining weekly meetings.
Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you send us your comments please?

Extrinsic motivators carrots and sticks may be how we were trained for simple set of rewards for a narrowed focus that can be outsourced but intrinsic motivators lead to creative, conceptual solutions and new product/ service development.
Now, how do we shift gears in Rotary?

Lynne Ternosky, Rotary E-Club of Canada One, D-5370

The old carrot and stick methods of motivation work with some limited tasks in business, but not with the complex problem solving in most work today.  People want autonomy in their work and will perform better and be more creative than through the old traditional carrot and stick methods, as proven by science.
Shane Best, RC of Longview, Texas, D-5860

I always enjoy coming to your site for a make-up. The TED talk was very interesting, I enjoyed the Rotary jukebox offering.

January is Vocational Service Month.
"Vocational Service" is one of the many reasons for Rotary's success. Yet, this second avenue of service in Rotary is often neglected. If we want our club to grow, we must keep vocational service in the forefront - in our planning and to take action. Ideas alone are useless unless put in action. Do what is right and put "Service Above Self".
Vocational service simply applies Rotary's concept of service to business, the profession and the workplace. Before Rotarians go about putting the principles of vocational service into practice, they need to reflect on their daily relations, with employees, suppliers and peers. Otherwise, how can they apply the words of the second Object of Rotary, which instructs them to understand and practice.

"This is still one of the best bands of our youth.  I think that Deep Purple and Uriah Heep, were two of the most listened to bands of my teenage years."
