GreeteImager this week: Colleen Milner

Greetings fellow Rotarians and welcome to Rotary E-Club of Canada One!  I am honoured to be your GREETER this week and send my message from Rickmansworth, United Kingdom – a small and very lovely village near the great
City of London!  I am very excited about the continued growth and expansion of e-clubs in our Rotary World as they open the opportunity for many more people of all ages and life experiences to join us.  I am a Canadian, from Victoria, British Columbia and have lived in London, England since August 2010 as a result of my husband's career with the Royal Canadian Navy. My origins with Rotary began in Victoria as a member of the Rotary Club of Colwood; a breakfast club and one of the longest serving Rotary Clubs in the Victoria area.  After a short time I became aware of the opportunity and need for a lunch club in our community and was part of the organizing group for the chartering of the Rotary Club of West Shore (Victoria) in September of 2004.  Here in the UK, I enjoy the fellowship of Rotarians at the Rotary Club of Misbourne Matins, a breakfast club with approximately 65 members, that meets in Gerrard’s Cross, a small village approximately 40 minutes from the City of London. I LOVE how our Rotary fellowships embraces us wherever we are in the world and provides an opportunity for us to learn about new cultures, yet remain bound together in SERVICE!  In that spirit, please be welcomed to this online format!

Let’s hear from our Guests

Each week we receive comments from guests and Prospective members, who attend our e-meetings. We like to share some of these comments with you.

“I have visited a lot of e-clubs lately and this format was the best- even stood for O Canada!”
Rick Gibson, Strathcona Sunrise – D5020

“Your humour and thought provoking pieces are the enticing introduction to another excellent Speakers Program. While I miss the camaraderie present in a terra club when I attend your e-club meetings the depth of insight and purpose your presentations bring goes far in being an equal replacement. Caline Strach's video is a wonderful reminder as to why I am a Rotarian and Dr.Jill Bolte Taylor's presentation worth sharing with all my friends and family. Great job!”
Robert Boyden, RC Canmore-D5360

“I would not change a thing. I love the layout and the material.”
Heather Negrych, RC Elliot Lake – D7010

“This weekly e-meeting was quite inspirational and has provided me with an excellent way to get my weekly sunshine fix. Thank you for making this e-meeting option available!”
Laurie Rancourt, RC Dawson Creek – D5370

Announcements

Different ways YOU can serve.
Each Rotarian can be part of our club in a different way.
We all have an opportunity to serve on a committee, recruit new members, assist with the weekly bulletin or weekly meeting, just to name a few. We also ask that you to serve as greeter. If you have not been a greeter lately, please contact our Program Chair.  Send your greeting, telling our members and guests why you are a Rotarian. Include a picture of your family or favorite Rotary project.

Community Service no matter where you are!

President Elect Bruce volunteered at a community dental clinic on Saturday, April 14 hosted by the Pacific Oral Health Society.

This is a new facility designed to support any residents of the lower mainland of BC who have difficulty accessing dental care due to financial restrictions. Children and adults received basic dental care from approximately 20 volunteer professionals. This activity comprised 8 hours towards Bruces' commitment to the e-club to provide at least 12 hours of community service quarterly.

Fellowship Opportunities for e-Rotarians!

On April 4, 20Image13, returning from their winter home in Manzanillo, Mexico, President Elly and Sergeant-at-Arms Ramiro visited PE Bruce and his wife Silvia in Mesa, Arizona. Elly and Ramiro had club banners prepared while in Mexico and left some with Bruce for distribution to the BC members. The banners are intended to promote our club amongst other clubs, in trade for their banners. Banners are available by contacting President Elly.

A Little Humor
A FEW RULES TO REMEMBER IN LIFE
1.     Money cannot buy happiness, but it's more comfortable to cry in a Corvette than on a bicycle.
2.     If you help someone when they're in trouble, they will remember you when they're in trouble again.
3.     Alcohol does not solve any problems, but then neither does milk.

New Members Corner

Our Rotary E-Club; Rich in Experience; Generous in Giving

At only eight weeks old, the Rotary E-Club of Canada One is just an infant, but it is rich with experience and blessed with many Rotarians who have demonstrated their commitment to the ideals of international service through contributions to the Rotary Foundation.

Our Club boasts  nine past club presidents. Elected by club members, they usually serve for a four year commitment, including their year as Club President.

In addition to our Past Presidents, our club benefits from the experience of three past district governors (President Elly Contreras and Honorary members Al Bergsma and Tanya Wolff).

District Governors have many years of experience in several aspects of club and district leadership before they serve as District Governor. They receive extensive training to lead their district of 50 or more clubs and often serve their district, zone or Rotary International for many years in several capacities afterwards.

The Rotary Foundation (TRF) is the charitable foundation of choice of Rotarians. It is the oldest non-denominational charitable foundation of it's kind in the world. It offers several ways to give resources for use in providing for the world’s less fortunate. Donations to TRF are 100% tax deductible to Canadians.

Club Foundation Chair Ross Hallett reports, that as of today as many as 20 members of our club have made contributions to our foundation.

TRF recognizes Rotarians, or anyone a Rotarian chooses to designate, with a Paul Harris Fellowship when a contribution of US$1,000 has been made.
Our Club reports the following 16 members to be Paul Harris Fellows (or having given multiple $1,000 donations, multiple PHF's):

Nicole Balan, Ramiro Contreras, Elly Contreras-Vermeulen, Winston Conyers, Jean-Michele Crepin, Herky Cutler, Jolly Dhaliwal, Doug Dyer, Ross Hallett, Bruce Kleeberger, Shirley Klyne, Beverlee Rasmussen, Archie Skirving, Glenn Walker, David Werrett and our newest PHF Anne Skirving, who received her recognition during our Charter Presentation ceremony, February 23 (the 104th Anniversary of Rotary).

In addition the following six members, committed to make TRF beneficiaries of their estate planning in the amount of $1,000 USD or more are designated as Rotary Benefactors, with two of them as Bequest Society members (the commitment in the estate planning of more than $10,000) Ramiro Contreras, Elly Contreras-Vermeulen, Ross Hallett, Bruce Kleeberger, Beverlee Rasmussen and David Werrett.

Foundation Committee Chair Ross asks members to contribute to our Foundation at THIS LINK.

Please read the five reasons why we should give to our Rotary Foundation:

Rotarians should consider including the Foundation in their Charity budget. If we all donated $10.00 or more a month (Direct Payment options available), it would be very beneficial.

Food for Thought

Heroes

Submitted by Archie Skirving

In the past month, Saint Patrick was celebrated by those of Irish descent, or wish they were. More honoured in pubs than cathedrals, national heroes have a place of honour in our society.
In Canada, it may be Remembrance Day, November 11th.
In the United States, it may be Memorial Day, the last weekend in May. Can we name those heroes ? Unless they are family or friends, probably not, but, heroes they remain.
In Canada, Rotary has had a long history of assisting “Crippled Children”. In Windsor and in Kitchener-Waterloo; Rotary Centres led the way.  Can we name those founding heroes ? Again, unless they are family or friends, probably not. (My wife Anne,  wears her father’s Paul Harris Award - given to him as one of the founders of Windsor’s Rotary Centre).
As Rotarians serve, we may well be seen as heroes  -  dropping those precious drops of medicine to prevent polio - hosting Exchange student from abroad  - the Rotary list is long.
Heroes  - as you place your Rotary pin on your lapel, you wear that sign of Rotary Heroism  - Service above Self.
