Greeter this week: Delwen Stander

(This is a poem that our E-Club member, Delwen, created for our December Fellowship Assembly.
Beautifully done!)

Ghosts of Leaves
The other day on walking to my door,
I chanced to glance at imprints stained in black,
Upon the concrete, made by leaves before
They blew away, their shapes still seen - no lack
Of colour could their memory erase,
But boldly they announced, "We once were here!",
Held down by rain, red maple, all ablaze,
And now just ghosts of leaves, all gone, not near.
Reflection caused me then a link to see,
Between these ghosts of leaves and Rotary,
A lesson, nature's own, for you and me.
The leaves are like Rotarians, I say,
Perhaps Canadian, who far from home,
Arrive in person, or through funds, today,
And then tomorrow fly away, to roam,
Again, to different climes, the constant though
Is that when there they "Serve Humanity",
Effecting change, come heat or snow,
And disregarding all adversity.
Our Rotary, when on the ground, stands out,
On quest always dire suffering to rout,
A reassuring sight for those in doubt.
But having left, the "ghosts" remain to be -
The smile upon the face of the small lad
From China, after palate surgery,
The boundless pride of a Mexican dad,
When daughter, through "Amigo", graduates,
Or kids in India or Salvador,
or Guatemala simply read - their fates
Forever changed. Their expectation? More!
When polio is dead, when world receives
Results, quite tangible, then it believes
In Rotary - we are the ghosts of leaves.

"Little Stories of Truth"
Once all villagers decided to pray for rain.
On the day of prayer all the people gathered, but only one boy came with an umbrella.
That's FAITH
When you throw babies in the air, they laugh because they know you will catch them.
That's TRUST
Every night we go to bed without any assurance of being alive the next morning, but still we set the alarms to wake up.
That's HOPE
We plan big things for tomorrow, in spite of zero knowledge of the future.
That's CONFIDENCE
On an old man's shirt was written a sentence
"I am not 80 years old; I am sweet 16 with 64 years of experience.'
That's ATTITUDE
We see the world suffering, but still we get married and have children.
That's LOVE

"Enjoy the team work of this wonderful musical group. It reminded me of my days in Guiding/ Scouting when we did the first part by a campfire and then my thoughts turned to communities like our Subirana, Honduras, struggling with lack of access to clean drinking water and how God does provide.
But finally I thought of our Rotarians  and partners who have a heart for Africa.  ENJOY."
