I don't know how you, dear reader and fellow Rotarian, feel, but I for one have had enough of this very protracted and frigid winter.  And, yes, it still is Winter even here in the Fraser Valley, given that it snowed on our acreage last week, and this week we had overnight temperatures of barely 0°C.  Even during the brief respites from the cold, it has rained almost every day - although this does represent a change from the heavy snows and ice rain we have experienced between November and now.
However, in the midst of bemoaning the weather, I did have the opportunity to reflect on what our experience is like, when compared to those of Rotarians around the world. So, for your amusement, consider this:
(a) when we think it's cold where we are, remember the Rotarians of Yakutsk, Siberia, Russia (District 2225), where the permafrost is 250m thick, and where the average temperature during the middle of Winter (which lasts from October to May) is -39°C.;
(b) when we think it's hot where we are, remember the Rotarian, Rob DeCou, of the Playa Venice Sunrise Club (District 5280), who, in the middle of the Summer, to raise funds for polio eradication, ran 146 miles across the heart of Death Valley, California, the hottest place on earth, where the average temperature during the Summer is 47°C., and can reach 57°C.;
(c) when we think it's wet where we are, remember the Rotarians of Medellin, Colombia (District 4280), who do projects in nearby Quibdo, where the average annual rainfall is almost 12,000mm (that's almost 12 meters of rain); and
(d) when we think it's dry where we are, remember the Rotarians of Arica Chinchorro, Chile (District 4320), where the average annual rainfall is 0.761mm (not even 1 millimeter).
And, most of all, just remember that these fellow Rotarians are serving above self in these places, and upholding the 4 Way Test, in extreme circumstances.
We should be thoroughly impressed by them, and equally proud to be part of our diverse Rotary World.

As always I enjoyed the variety of information and tidbits as well as the main TED talk.  I'd never before considered showing economic status via images and comparing them.  Thanks for opening my eyes a little wider!

Anna Rosling Rönnlund wants all of us to find out, so she sent photographers to 264 homes in 50 countries  to document the stoves, bed, toilets, toys and more in households from every income bracket around the world. Using Dollar Street she shows how families live in Latvia or Burkina Faso or Peru as Rosling Rönnlund explains the power of data visualization to help us better understand the world.
