Greeter this week: Jane Kirkpatrick
Greetings to the Rotary E-Club from the Heart of South Western Ontario!
I'm honoured to have been asked to send you greetings by my good friend and Rotarian Lynne Ternosky. Lynne and I became friends through our work on the Festival City Rotary Club's International Service project, Pathways to Literacy in El Salvador.
What a learning curve for all of us this was! It took a lot of dogged legwork on the part of Lynne to learn the ins and outs of Rotary matching grants, CRCID and CIDA regulations, not to mention CRA rules governing donations. You folks are indeed fortunate to have the benefit of Lynne's experience.
One of the reasons I joined Rotary back in the 1990's was because of the international avenue of service, so being able to work on the El Salvador project was really important to me. We accomplished a lot (nearly half a million dollars worth of product and service!), and staying involved with the people we worked with and for continues to be a privilege.
As a former librarian, literacy is very dear to my heart, so I naturally gravitate to projects involving books and reading. I so enjoyed seeing Dolly Parton at the RI International Conference in Montreal in 2010, and was impressed with her Foundation. It's great that your club is working with the Dolly Foundation to bring books to our people in the north.
Although I am not an active club member now, I value my honorary membership in the Festival City Rotary Club of Stratford, and wear my Paul Harris pin with pride. And I'm proud to be a part of Lynne's Ontario "hub."
Have a great meeting!

Born in Port Alberni, British Columbia, Rick Hansen grew up in Williams Lake, British Columbia. As a young athlete, he had won all-star awards in five sports. He was paralyzed at the age of 15 from being in the back of a truck with his friend, when suddenly the pick up truck swerved and hit a tree. He left the bed of the truck from the impact and received a spinal cord injury. He worked on rehabilitation, completed high school, then became the first student with a physical disability to graduate in physical education from the University of British Columbia. Hansen won national championships on wheelchair volleyball and wheelchair basketball teams. He went on to become a world class champion wheelchair marathoner and Paralympic athlete. He competed in wheelchair racing at both the 1980 and 1984 Summer Paralympics, winning a total of three gold, two silver, and one bronze medal.

Being of the 'older' generation, I often lament how easy it is for my 30 year old son to maneuver his way around a computer and the internet. But I overheard him having a discussion with his peers about how the little kids could do so much, so fast, on Smartphones and tables and that he was feeling 'old and out of touch' with all the latest technology!

Wow, thank you for showing this video.  It sure got me thinking about how I can show gratitude every day of my life - in many different ways.  Sometimes we need reminding of how wonderful our life is and being grateful should come naturally!
Janice Vervaeke, Rotary E-Club of Canada One, D-5370

Sometimes it takes a strong reminder such as avoiding a near death experience to remember all the good people in your life.
Changing your habits of thanking those in your life can change your relationship as well with these people.

Michael Thomas, RC of Stony Plain, D-5370

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards
Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) Institute is an annual 1 day conference hosted by the RYLA Committee and Rotary Clubs of Rotary International District 5370 for Interact students. This year, it will be held on November 7th, 2015 at the Edmonton Clinical Health Academy (ECHA), University of Alberta and is free of charge! The Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) institute focuses on developing and promoting student leadership within Interact clubs in District 5370. We start with the foundations of personal development, and flow into aspects of further building your Interact club. At RYLA Institute, interact students can expect hands-on opportunities and activities that will exercise their newly-acquired skills, as well as to network with other Interactors who also aspire to be strong and influential leaders. It is an amazing opportunity to strengthen our district.  Registration is now open online with this link:

Continuing Education: Each week at Rotary there is a program designed to keep one informed about what is going on in the community, nation and world. Each meeting provides an opportunity to listen to different speakers and a variety of timely topics.
Fun: Rotary is fun, a lot of fun. Each meeting is fun. The club projects are fun. Social activities are fun. The service is fun.
Public Speaking Skills: Many individuals who joined Rotary were afraid to speak in public. Rotary develops confidence and skill in public communication and the opportunity to practice and perfect these skills.

"Everybody can be great...because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love."
