Greeter this week: Vicki Horsfield

Although I wasn't able to attend the 2017 Rotary International Convention in Atlanta, I did later listen to some of the speakers. The one that impacted me most was by Gary Haugen, President and CEO of International Justice Mission with his talked called "Until all are free: Our next steps in the fight to end slavery." Many years ago, I had read his book, "Terrify No More" about how IJM rescued young girls from forced prostitution in Cambodia.
Gary Haugen and the International Justice Mission explain how poverty begets violence against women and children. Out of desperation and/or naivety due to lack of education, women and children living in poverty get caught up in the web of slavery, never to find their way out. Gary Haugen called on Rotarians at the convention to join him in the fight against slavery.
I was glad to recently discover that there exists a Rotary Action Group Against Slavery (RAGAS). Launched informally at the Rotary International Convention 2009, it has grown to over 1,700 Rotarians spanning 65 countries. On 24th January 2013, the RI Board acknowledged RAGAS as a Rotarian Action Group. By doing so, it recognized that Rotarians can, and should, play an active part in ending the misery, pain, shame and suffering of millions caused by illegal trafficking and human enslavement.
Any Rotarian can become a Member of RAGAS. First step is to complete an application form (found at: http://ragas.online/membership-application/). Once submitted, your application will be automatically sent for review.
If accepted, you'll be asked to pay your subscription. An annual subscription, with card costs is $28USD. That's the price slave masters paid to buy an enslaved soul at 'Les Marche des Jeunes Gens' on the Ivory Coast.

Comments from our Guests and Members
Members and guest attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring and entertaining weekly meetings.
Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you send us your comments please?

I did the meeting and watched the program on water and sanitation.  One can only hope that countries like Haiti will be spared the ravages of a major epidemic before proper hygiene and clean water is established there.

The Aid at the Border documentary was refreshing, especially in a week that the US President has "graced" the news headlines again and again. It is a lovely humanizing reminder that there are people out there doing things that may seem small but it is what they can do and it is making a difference in their area. "We are on this earth to help each other, not hurt each other."

Fellowship Assembly
It was wonderful to have the time to just talk with each other and share what is going on in our lives. A great opportunity to get to know each other better!

Vicki Horsfield, Rotary E-Club of Canada One, D-5370

Amazing meeting!  Canadian Summer video needs to be viewed full screen - breathtaking!  However, Emmanuel Jal stole my heart - paying it forward one child at a time because of one woman's selfless acts which saved him.. and the power of education!

Looking for adventure abroad
Okotoks, Alberta: Abi MacFarlane taking off for a year-long exchange in Italy

By Krista Conrad Aug 22, 2018

A Foothills Comp student is saying "arrivederci" to Okotoks for the next year.
Abi MacFarlane, who would have been going into Grade 11 at the Comp, is taking off for Italy on Sept. 2, just before her classmates head back to school.
MacFarlane is this year's Okotoks Rotary exchange student. She will live in Terlizzi, Italy, a town with a similar population to Okotoks, until June.
"I'm pretty excited," said the 16-year-old MacFarlane. "It's a pretty neat opportunity."

"There is no trust more sacred than the one that the world holds with children. There is no duty more important than ensuring that their rights are respected, that their welfare is protected, that their lives are free from want and fear, and that they grow up in peace".
