Rachel McClure will present information to us about the Washoe County Gardener Program.
The University of Nevada, Reno Extension Master Gardener program is part of an international program that is a volunteer educator program designed to teach research-based Nevada gardening practices to volunteers who in turn share this knowledge with their local communities through educational presentations and workshops, community events, answering home gardening questions at their local county Extension office, and much more.
The Washoe County Master Gardener programs supports many local gardens and provides several educational programs annually. They have a Teaching & Demonstration Garden, located in the Community Garden at Rancho San Rafael, they support the Northern Nevada Veterans Home, Ronald McDonald House, local FFA, host an annual seedling sale and greater Reno area garden tour. They also hold a Horticulture Help Desk at the Washoe County Extension office Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10 am - 2 pm, and much more.
”Rachel received a B.A., in Communication Studies from California State University, San Bernardino, with a concentration in Public Argumentation and Rhetoric in 1997. She spent years in the private sector managing stores for Target and Borders Bookstore, leaving it for the family Horticulture business. The small crop specialty production nursery provided ornamental perennials to local independent nurseries in Nevada as well as edible flowers, specialty herbs and mushrooms to local restaurants in Nevada and California. The nursery had great partnerships with local high schools, FFA and local communities, helping to create high school berry programs, orchards, help establish the petunia basket program for Gardnerville, Minden and Carson City, on site classes partnering with the department of Agriculture and garden clubs in Smith and Mason Valleys."
