Rugged Roots
Next Monday, 8/14,2023, we are brown-bagging it at Rugged Roots Farm - 501 Crescent Street - Quincy off Hwy. 70 on your way towards FRC.
The mission of the farm is: To increase access to local foods for Plumas County residents, prioritizing underserved populations, provide workforce development programs, and create educational food and farming opportunities.
On this "field trip," I'm not sure if our hands will get dirty, but our feet will certainly so wear appropriate shoes for the dirt.
Kaleb's Great Adventure
On Monday, Jill Dupras, provided a back-story on her son Kaleb Dupras, our Rotary Exchange student. Jill offered glimpes of Kaleb's Argentina Adventure which is coming to an end soon. He was originally slated to travel to Australia where they speak English. When that didn't work out, Kaleb pivoted with the help of David Little and went to Argentina where they don't speak English. Kaleb adapted. He is practicing Club Soccer (or Futbal) with his host "brother," attended a 3 day Rotary Camp with kids from all over the world, and visited the iconic Iguazu Falls which span the borders of Argentina and Brazil. Kaleb accessed both sides. He says his exchange has been "hard but wonderful - like a fairy tale!"
Last Week's Speaker
Monday's speaker, Rick Leonhardt recently went to Michigan where he attended a "Grazing Academy." He learned about "Regenerative Agriculture" - a management practice for farmers and ranchers which advocates developing the soil by grazing correctly, mimicking what nature already does and what animals in the wild do. Rick mentioned that nature isn't a monoculture and that the more diverse the pasture, the more nutritious.
He shared several websites including "Roots of Change" a network of organizations & individuals working toward a sustainable and climate smart food production system which is specific to Northern California, promoting locally grown produce and meat, as well as regional food distribution. Member of the Week
Johnny Mansell decreed that Quincy Rotary is back in the Highway Clean-Up business. Help out on Saturday, 8/26/23 at 9 am. Meet in Safeway Parking Lot.
