During my term as Quincy Rotary president, I applied for and received a matching grant for $1,000 each from our Rotary Club and Rotary District 5190 for the Highway 70 Triangle Project in the center of Quincy. We would install an irrigation/sprinkler system and replace some plants and wood chips. Up to this time, Quincy Soroptimists had taken responsibility for the triangle patch, so they were contacted, and were supportive of our efforts to help with revitalizing the triangle. All agreed that the triangle needed updating starting with clearing off the entire area. Amazingly, the project morphed into a community effort.

Tom Vagliviello donated many hours with his machinery clearing the site. Other organizations became interested in the project like the Labor of Love and volunteers from our Rotary Club and Soroptimists. Help also came from the Quincy High School “S” Club Members. A committee was formed composed of Jeff and Tracy Kepple, Kris Miravalle, Carolyn Rouse, Frank Carey and myself who devoted many hours developing a plan to revitalize the triangle area. Word got out about the project and soon there were many individuals and vendors who donated time and equipment to clean the area.

The plan was to have a simulated creek bed with metal sculptures of fish, cranes, and other creatures. The sculptures were donated by David Sims, of Topper’s Tree Service. Meanwhile, Frank Carey volunteered his time to install a new irrigation system funded by our Rotary Grant. Carolyn Rousch and Tracy Kepple developed a plan for new drought resistant plants to be placed on the triangle. Finally, the Triangle Project Committee discussed signage which would, perhaps, be too expensive, but would include an engraved stone. Then, Bill Jacks, of Stonehenge Signs, generously donated his work. The carved stone sign will recognize the Maidu of Plumas County and their love for this place we all call home as well as those who helped with the project.

What started out as a very small project, expanded to a new focal point in our community due to the generous patrons and our Rotary Club. The last phase of the Triangle Project will be to install the metal sculptures, place additional rocks along the creek bed, add more wood chips, and install the commemorative stone recognizing the Maidu as well as those who supported this project. Rotarians wanting to help are asked to be at the site from 9:00 a.m. to noon on Saturday, November 12, 2022.

 

The official dedication at the site begins on Saturday at 1 pm at the Triangle. For those Rotarians who helped with the project, a very special thank you. Finally, a special thank you to Bill Boon from Rotary District 5190 who was so helpful and supportive of our grant efforts. His patience and guidance were beyond the call of duty.
