Speech Contest
Quincy High's Matt Gibson (Leonhardt) came in first at Quincy Rotary’s Speech Contest but the other contestants - Addison Gay, Hana Hostetter, & Ava McColm - trailed right behind him!
The tally was close. Each contestant had five to seven minutes to explain this year’s theme for the contest: "Rotary is a volunteer organization. How have you volunteered towards promoting HOPE in the world, and how did you see HEARTS impacted through the experience?"
Matt spoke about the game club he started at his last school where the students felt isolated. The club connected students and gave them a sense of belonging. Addison (second place) spoke of her experiences as President of QHS's S-Club, "S" for Service, and how volunteering provides critical connections. Ava (third place), as Vice-President of S-Club, served Thanksgiving Dinner to the community where no one sat alone, and she felt pure and kind energy. Hana spoke about how volunteering impacts the self and the person receiving on the other end.
All 4 QHS students inspired us with their experiences volunteering in their community. Along with the contestants, Quincy Rotary hosted lunch for their families and the contest judges. Thank you to those judges - Kelsea Johnson from West End Theatre, and FRC's English professors Dr. William Lombardi and Dr. Nikki Grose. Thank you, Jim Boland, for being the timer and Jeb for being the tie-breaking judge.
First Place Winner Matt moves onto the area contest in Loyalton at the end of April.
