As a tribute to David Windle's life of service and friendship, Quincy Rotary came together at last week's meeting to share memories and reflections of the dedicated Rotarian. Darren Beatty, Tim Gallagher, Bill Abramson, Doug Prouty, Chuck Leonhardt, Rick Leonhardt, Karen Kleven, Mike Summerfield, David Little, Rick Foster, Kelsha Sutherland, Frank Carey, Lisa Kelly and others shared heartfelt stories.
Here are snippets of what was said:
Rick L. told how on the night his dad, Danny, was airlifted to Renown, David, wearing his EMT hat, made sure Rick accompanied his dad to the helicopter. That was the last time Rick saw his dad. He is forever thankful that David was at the scene to help.
Darren B. met David when he was two living in the same neighborhood. Their families were close friends - the Windle house was the neighborhood hub, and the door never locked. Darren thinks of David as a dad and mentor to him. David guided Darren towards public service.
Frank Carey mentioned that David bought (through Cal Sierra) most of the athletic scoreboards in Plumas County.
Doug P. revealed that David introduced himself and asked quizzically, “You're the Judge?”
Karen K. said, “We agreed on nothing. But David was always kind to me. He said I was his favorite liberal friend.”
Tim G. asked, “How in the hell did he get away with all the things he'd say?”
That was David - outspoken and sometimes inappropriate, David also was generous and dedicated to this community. We will miss him.
