She Speaks Her Truth
"Hesausaka niki heskum" are the Maidu words for "I acknowledge you, my friend."
A hush fell over Monday's meeting, as guest speaker Trina Cunnigham spoke of her Maidu language and traditions and shared her sacred objects. Trina, a member of Mt. Maidu, honors the history and culture of her people.
Her medicine basket has been handed down by multiple generations. Maidu baskets are recognizable because they display patterns of three. Trina's holds valued acorns, choke cherries, and Flicker feathers, their sacred bird. The feathers decorate headdresses and such. All these items are sacred to these indigenous people as is their homeland.
Trina shared her truth about the Maidu people’s sense of outrage over the Columbus Day national holiday, coming this Monday. For them, Columbus destroyed their world, leaving them with the feeling of being erased. Instead, a national recognition of Indigenous People's Day honors Trina's people, recognizing their ancestral homeland, a land Trina has rarely left, and continues to protect.

The Spotlight is a new feature of the QR Bulletin where the light shines on a Rotarian, letting us know bits about the person and most importantly, their Rotary: the Why! The answer to that question was easy for Kory, "We have a lot of fun while we give back to the community. We do a lot of good work!"
