The young locals have been chosen to represent Quincy Rotary at this summer's RYLA and this fall's REGL programs. Both programs are sponsored by No. California and No. Nevada Rotary Districts. RYLA is designed to engender passion, resilience, determination, mental toughness, gratitude and compassion. Those QHS juniors about to be seniors chosen are Simone Smith, Macy Peay, Brody Nunez, and Anna Mercer. REGL is an eighth grade leadership program offering professional leadership training to help young people transition into their high school experience. Those students selected are Chance McElroy, Jemma Trueblood and Lilah Cudia with Kendrick Gay and Jovie Lerch as alternates.
Both programs instill in the participants the value of Service above Self, a core Rotary belief.
Water is Life - The Kenyan Water Project
Dr. Cathy Fitzgerald visited Rotary updating us on the construction of simple water wells in Kenya - a collaboration developed with Quincy Rotary for over 17 years. Dr. Fitzgerald, with Quincy Rotary’s financial support, has been leading teams to locate suitable drilling sites, drilling water wells by hand, and installing low tech pump systems in Kenyan villages. Wells are constructed in village squares for communal use, school sites and medical facilities. The wells are low tech for simplicity and availability of replacement parts, but also to keep the costs manageable. In 2022, a completed well costs $2750. This year, Quincy Rotary has donated $1000 towards the well project, seeking additional pledges to cover the full amount. The villages benefiting from this project are thankful as the photo shows. The words "Maji ni uhai" mean "Water is Life." Indeed.
