Support Sierra Leone
Maryann Kokes shared her remarkable story at Quincy Rotary last week. She has traveled a tremendous path from Sierra Leone to Sierra Valley, and now she's on a mission to bring opportunity to her roots by founding a community vocational center.
Maryann was born in Africa's Sierra Leone, a violent war-torn country. A complex family situation and the turmoil of the Sierra Leone Civil War shaped Maryann's younger years. By 8, she lived in an orphanage miles from her family. Fortunately, a family in California adopted Maryann and she was raised from then on in the U.S. She met her husband in L.A. and they eventually moved to Indian Valley.
Maryann feels blessed to have escaped the chaos in her country. Nevertheless, she returned to her village as an adult. During that visit, she vowed to build a facility that could transform her people by providing essential skills. The center will be used also as gathering place for the community including a place of worship.

The Sound of Music
