FRC's new Rodeo Coach - Zack Brown - shared tales about his life and rodeo on Monday. One he didn't share was that his wife is Quincy native Natalie Ray - a graduate of QES, QHS, & FRC. The couple met at FRC where Natalie played volleyball and Zack competed on the rodeo team. Zack went to UNLV to rodeo and earned a degree in Business Management. Natalie went on to earn a doctorate in physical therapy. Zack and Natalie have two young boys and are thrilled to return to small town Quincy to raise their family and connect with the community.
On Tuesday, Zack made a connection with the community at Plumas Charter School - the day after speaking at Quincy Rotary. Zack brought his FRC Rodeo team to show kids how to rope "dummy" steers. To their delight, the kids won a "Golden Ticket" to the upcoming FRC Rodeo - Friday, Oct. 6 and Saturday, Oct. 7. Let's be clear, despite those tickets, the evening performances are free to everyone and a great community event.
Though coaching is a full-time job, Zack still competes competitively on the Professional Rodeo Cowboy circuit as a bareback rider. On Monday, he donned a shiny belt buckle to prove he is a winner. Zack alluded to doing well in rodeos last weekend. As he said later, "I went to 3 rodeos and placed second at two of them. I was winning San Bernadino when I left, but they bumped me to 3rd by the time it was over."
A motto of Zack's is "Champions are not those who never fail, but those who never quit." I have known Zack for a long time; I was his English teacher at FRC and his academic advisor. Did I tell him to quit rodeoing? He wouldn’t have listened if I had, and he is better off never having quit.
