Monday's speaker, Kane Russell, works as the Forest & Natural Resources Advisor for the University Cooperative Extension - Plumas-Sierra. Kane's expertise includes forest management, forest ecology, fire ecology, prescribed fire, forest monitoring, and fuels management.
The University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) office for Plumas and Sierra Counties, located at the fairgrounds, is part of a statewide system that makes research-based information available to the general public, local agencies, and other organizations. Skylar, seen below with her parents Carlie and Greg McCarthy, and President JoDee, was Quincy Rotary's RYLA leader (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards program) this past summer. She shared her newfound wisdom on Monday. Her favorite RYLA activity was the Ropes Course which included jumping 40 feet from a platform. Yes, she said it was scary, as was coming into a group of 100+ knowing no one. As she shared, “I realize that the biggest lessons from camp were not just about completing activities or overcoming physical challenges. They were about learning to trust others, being willing to be vulnerable, and recognizing that growth happens when we stop automatically choosing what feels safest.”
