Next Week's Meeting
On Monday, March 6 we are back at the Mineral Building. Let's hope there is no blizzard and the roads are plowed. The Speech Contest was moved to this Monday and we anticipate 6 to 7 high school speakers, their teachers, principal, judges, and speakers' parents, so we will have a full room. Fingers crossed that the predicated winter storm will arrive after the winners are chosen.
Calendar Updates
Area Foundation Dinner, March 31 at the Mineral Building, will be a formal dinner meeting. PaulHarris recipients should wear their medallion. Rotary Clubs from Greenville, Portola and Loyalton are invited to attend as well.
April 10 and 17 – We will have special catered meetings “Off Campus” (not at the Mineral Building) – Updates to follow.
The AnnualQuincy Rotary Golf Tournament, May 6 at Plumas Pines: everyone should plan to stay all day. FYI, slots for playing golf are filling fast!

Because the Speech Contest was postponed due to snow, on Monday, President Darren acted as our pinch-hitter. He spoke about California’s Seismic Mandate for Plumas District Hospital. The long, sometimes catastrophic history of earthquakes in the state was the impetus for SB1953 which mandates that, by 2030, all hospitals must be built to withstand an 8.0 magnitude earthquake, or risk losing their license. Darren gave the history of PDH and explained which buildings must meet which standards. He quoted the cost to build a new structure is now $3000 per square feet and estimated the total cost could be $100 million.
There are three ways to finance the cost:
1) General Obligation Bond
2) USDA loan
3) State Assistance
He shared that the cost of a bond could be as much as $650 a year for a $350,000 home. He reported that Jim Ward had introduced ABA969 that could exempt PDH from the mandate, and the bill is backed by the unions. He shared that the location would likely be on the south side of Buck’s Lake Road. He also explained why the Skilled Nursing Facility is being built before other changes are made.
