A program was presented by AWAKEN on sex trafficking in Nevada
Jason and Kim Guinasso were introduced to our Smith Valley Rotary members by Sheriff Al McNeil. AWAKEN is a Christian non-profit organization serving Northern Nevada. Their mission is to increase awareness and education surrounding the issue of commercial sexual exploitation and to provide housing and restoration for the victims.

Sadly, sex trafficking is a real problem in Northern Nevada, with several counties still allowing legal prostitution. Half of the women surveyed in in Nevada's legal brothels reported being trafficked into Nevada from elsewhere. Legal prostitution increases the rate of sex trafficking.
Since 2013 Awaken has helped over 300 women and children in Northern Nevada 85% of which were between the ages of 16-18. The average age of entry into prostitution is 14 years old. This is today's modern slavery.
