PROJECT SANTA CLAUS UPDATE

Started in 1988 by Marilyn and Carl Malkmus, Project Santa Claus has partnered with community members, local businesses and service clubs to provide Christmas gifts to local children in families that need a little assistance to make Christmas complete.  Alicia Main, Director of the Chamber of Commerce, informed the Minden Rotary Club at their meeting this past Thursday that last year over 223 families (with over 717 children) received gifts thanks to the generosity of our community.

Families in need are enrolled by the Family Support Council and the Carson Valley Food Closet.  Children of these families complete their wish list on an angel ornament which gets put on trees around the community for community members to pick and fulfill the wish.  Service Clubs and Community members gather in early December to wrap gifts and complete gift tags.  Mann also utilizes the entire Douglas High girls basketball team to run gifts to cars when families come to pick up the gifts.  This year, pickup will be on December 13th and 14th.
Rotary Club of Minden Foundation awarded 5 grants directed toward at risk children during the first trimester donations of the 2024-25 Rotary year.  Congratulations to the following recipients:

  1. Jacks Valley Elementary for Handheld Translators (Polish, Russian, Tagolic and Spanish) $220.00.
  2. Jacks Valley Elementary for an Upgraded PA System (to replace the one from 1981) $2,000.00.
  3. Jacks Valley Elementary for STEM Program materials (robotics and coding) for 2nd grade classroom $1,811.97.
  4. Gardnerville Elementary School for STEM Program materials in the classroom and the After School Program (4 robots and consumables) $1,083.00.
  5. Douglas County Library (Reading pods and reading kits) $500.00.
In addition, the Foundation disbursed an International Grant for $1000.  This Global Grant went to the Rotary Club of Ajijic in Mexico for menstrual education workshops and dispensing reusable menstrual kits.

All of that totals $6614.97!  What a great reason to be thinking about sponsors for our May Minden Giving Cup Golf Tournament!
