Ms. Adie Brook, Community Services Director, Douglas County

Happenings in the County 

Ms. Adie presented information to RC Minden on September 11 meeting. As Community Services Director, Ms. Adie oversees many programs with a primary focus on Social Services, Parks and Recreation. Douglas County partners with a lot of local community groups to make sure the events are successful offering many opportunities for residents to be engaged; such as Hot Air for Hope, Douglas County Rodeo, and Carson Valley Chukar Club fundraiser. Douglas County also supports Carson Valley Days put on by the 20/30 Club, Sports tournaments and Big Mama’s Car Show. Douglas County has its’ own foundation The Douglas County Community Services Foundation which was formed in 2011 to support community centers and senior centers in Douglas County, both at the Lake and Valley. The Foundation acts as a liaison between the government of Douglas County and the private donor in order to maximize and meet the private donor's needs.

Douglas County has an additional revenue stream by collecting a parking fee through a Summer parking program on Warrior Way at Zephyr Cove Beach. They partner with the school district to manage over-use and over-tourism at Zephyr Cove. But great news, Douglas County residents are not charged.

Improvements in the works by Community Services include a playground at Stoddick Park and a Splash Pad at TRE. The latest new project is the “Cat Cottage”, a planned 1,700 square foot facility at the Animal Shelter. They have  about $240,000 to fund the Cat Cottage and have engaged several contractors and businesses for the project.

And, Douglas County has acquired the movie theater. A performance venue has been in the strategic plan for decades and the acquisition of the theater was the most cost-effective way to create an indoor performing arts venue. Douglas County has partnered with Carson Valley Cultural Arts Council to manage the movie theater as the County awaits the results of an RFQ to see what would be the best use of the theater. 

There’s a lot happening in Douglas County and Ms. Adie is at the heart of it all. As Ms. Adie concluded she said  “If you have a need, we probably meet that somewhere in this Department.”  Check it out at Douglas County Community Services.

Milly and Marsha set up a Rotary Booth at the Douglas County Job Fair. We joined many nonprofits seeking volunteers and spread the good works of our Club

The Rotary Club of Minden is happy to welcome the following new members:

• Ric Casper is a graduate from Carson City High (but is quick to add his 3 kids all graduated from Douglas High).  He attended BYU as an undergraduate and Yale Law School.  He worked for the US Attorney's office for 4 years before coming back home and working for the Douglas County District Attorney's Office
• Loral Langemeier from Live Out Loud Publishing.  Loral has 2 kids (Logan age 25 and Tristan age 18).  She is a graduate of Nebraska Wesleyan, has an MA from Omaha and is a writer.  AND she's dating President Graham.
• Eric Barter from Bad Boys Bail Bonds (Past President from the Rotary Club of Arcadia) .  Craft talk was given at the 9-4-25 Rotary meeting:  Eric has a long history in Rotary as his dad was President of the Arcadia club in 1937.  In 1891, Eric's grandfather started Homen's Grocery Story.  Eric continued in the retail path at places like Gottschalks and Emporium Capwell.  When Emporium's went out of business, he joined a bail bonds business his nephew had started.  It was at this point that he got back involved in Rotary.  He was President of the club in 2005.  One of the projects he is most proud of is the wheelchair project in Tijuana, Mexico in honor of each week's speaker.  He had throat cancer the year he was President - talk about overcoming obstacles and dedication to Rotary!
