Gantt Miller, working on clearing his red badge given to new members, gave a Craft Talk to help us get to know him.

Gantt is married to Kory Miller, who joined the club last spring. Together, they have 3 sons who are all "financially independent, morally and socially adjusted".

A WW2 baby and the son of a Navy officer (who was one of 14 to break Japanese code), Gantt grew up in many countries including the US, China and France. He played football in high school in Delaware and dazzled everyone with his fluency in English, French and Chinese - often in the same sentence! He was a walk on for the football team at the University of Arizona and was quickly moved up to first string. After a year, he decided to make his priority Architectural studies rather than football.

After graduation, Gantt worked for a year in Chicago before moving to Vail and going into business on his own. A trip to St. Louis reconnected him to a family friend who offered him a job and fate lead him to meeting Kory. The job lasted 5 years before he again branched off on his own in Washington D.C. and built a successful Architecture business. 15 years later, Kory's father died and Gantt and Kory took over the family window business, Winco Window, the oldest window company in the U.S.

Have you ever wondered how you could make the building your small business operates in more energy efficient? The Nevada Green Business Network Advisors are here to provide a free analysis for you that could not only lessen your impact on the environment but also save you money.

Members of the Minden Rotary Club heard from Carson Valley Green Business Advisor, Michael Lubin, about the exciting possibilities for small and medium size businesses. The organization primarily partners with greenUP! and Western Nevada College and serves the greater Reno area (including Douglas County) as well as Las Vegas. There is a team of five green business advisors who will help businesses navigate the analysis and certification process.

Why would your business want to go Green? Data shows the benefits fall in 4 areas:

1. Cost Savings

2. Competitive Advantage

3. Recruitment and Retention 4. Environmental Impact

How do you get started? Contact the organization at www.NVGreenBusiness.org. You will first register and then complete a checklist. An analysis will be performed, and an advisor will review the report with you. If the business chooses to make the suggested improvements, Tier I certification will be awarded, and the upgrades will be promoted. These upgrades could be as simple as conversions to LED lighting (75% more energy efficient) or maintenance on an HVAC system. Tier II and III certifications are also available for businesses that go above and beyond the suggested improvements. Bently Nevada Corporation is currently a Tier II Green business.

There are funding opportunities to assist your business make the recommended upgrades. Nevada Green Business Network will assist you in finding these resources. Currently, opportunities exist with NV Energy as well as Intuit Corporation for projects such as upgraded lighting, weatherization of buildings and other projects. The Intuit funding is up to $1000 and ends February 21, 2025.

Frankie Alvarado (Douglas County Schools) and Whitney Bullion (Wells Fargo) received their red badges this week. Just a couple of activities to complete before they become full blue badge Rotarians!

A January Anniversary for Tim DeGhelder earned him flowers to bring home to his lovely wife.

Pam Pugliese was recognized for a "big" birthday in early January. President Sam honored her with birthday brownies that were delicious!
