Our own Dick Schwabe was featured in the Record Courier recently! Here's the article written by Kurt Hildebrand:
"Former Marine Corps Capt. Dick Schwabe said he told five other people about the PACT Veterans Clinic at the Douglas County Community & Senior Center.
“I think this is a great event,” he said on Feb. 22.
Former Marine Sgt. Marvin Christy said he served in the early days of Vietnam from 1962-1968, including time with an advisory team in 1964.
“I’m just checking on different things the Vets have to offer,” he said. “Keeping up to date with the local clinic, which does a great job of tending to me when I need it.”
The former Nebraskan said he came here a decade ago after his daughter married a deputy and had three grandchildren."

WHAT'S NEW IN COMMUNITY SERVICES?
Celebrating a busy first year in her position as the Douglas County Community Services Director, Brook Adie shared with the Minden Rotary Club a little about her department and the current capital projects in the works.
The Community Services Department is responsible for various divisions including Parks, Recreation, Animal Control, Social Services, Noxious Weeds, DART transportation, three preschools, Young at Heart, and the new Arts Center. She noted that all youth and teens currently get free access to both centers (Community Center and the Swim Center).
Ryan Stanton, Deputy Director of Community Services, shared the update on the current capital projects:
The Splash Pad at the TRE Community Center should begin construction this summer after power is established at the location.
The Fairgrounds Bleacher project will add 12 rows with 304 seats and 6 wheelchair spaces. These bleachers are 3 separate but mobile units that could be moved to the Community Center for a pickleball tournament or a big event at one of the parks. The bleachers should be installed at the fairgrounds in time for the Rodeo.
An Emergency Generator is being purchased for the Animal Shelter and a Cat Lodge is being installed.
A Playground at Stodick Park will replace the old equipment through a land/water conservation grant. It will be fully ADA compliant.
A feasibility study is in progress for an Equestrian Center at the Fairgrounds similar to the Fallon Indoor Center
Outdoor recreation ideas such as a ropes course or outdoor community center are being explored for the 600+ acres in the area between the fairgrounds and the dump.
An Archery Park may be considered for a 40 acre parcel off Red Hawk Court and East Valley along with flood mitigation and a rural park.
Possibilities for the use of the newly acquired Minden Cinema complex are being explored. The County will be given the keys in July. In the meantime, public comments are requested for the renovation. This facility will compliment, not compete with facilities like the Tahoe Blue Events Center and CVIC Hall. They might still show movies and other possibilities include theatre and a conference center.
Finally, the Pickleball Courts at the Community and Senior Center were discussed. Thanks to community participation at a Super Bowl Pancake Breakfast, the Minden Rotary Club (and pickleball players) raised and presented a check for $4000 to help fund sun shelter / shades to cover the Pickleball Courts. These shades are 12’ x 12’ x 8’ tall and will cost over $10,000 each.
Did you know that the Rotary Club of Minden will be celebrating 100 years of service in 2026 (as will Route 66 and Highway 101!) A committee has been formed to work on the celebration date, type of celebration and all the details. Let Dick Schwabe or Lori Breyer know if you are interested in participating or simply have ideas!
