August 3 Meeting
Dr Jeff Orr, orthopedist with Tahoe Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, presented information on trends in joint replacement. The most common joints to be replaced are knees and hips. (If you have a bad knee and hip, Dr Orr recommends that you get the hip replaced first).
The main reasons leading to joint replacement are arthritis, injury and inflammatory disease.
There have been great advances in joint replacement through robotics. With the aid of technology, doctors can virtually configure the operation, creating precise measurements, with 90 percent of the work done before surgery
These are usually elective surgeries and many people put them off longer than they should. Ask yourself theses questions when considering joint replacement: Is your injury...
---keeping you from doing things you like to do...
---keeping you up at night...
---on a pain scale (1-10), is your pain greater than 5?
Dr Orr has his patients up and about the day after surgery - walking 20 steps - with physical therapy starting right away.
John Breylinger gave a testimonial about Dr Orr's dad who treated him when he broke his femur in five places a few years back... He's a living testament to the great work that Dr Orr and now his son are providing.
Dr Orr was presented with a Giving Cup Rotary Hat and a flask for those cold days on the slopes.
