RYLA - Rotary Youth Leadership Awards is an intensive leadership experience organized by Rotary clubs and districts where young people can develop leadership skills while having fun and making connections.
8/1 Bring an item for donation to the MEFIYI baskets for their annual fundraiser on 8/9. One basket is beach-themed and the other is Italian food basket themed. Please bring donations to the meeting and give to Lori
8/8 NO REGULAR MEETING AT COD. Two special events on August 9th . Concerts in the park hot dog service and MEFIY fundraising dinner. See Howard for the Fund Raiser and Sam for the Concert. You should be at one or the other!
8/17 Food Closet distribution help from 7:30 to 10 am.
8/22 Board of Directors meeting with the District Governor to
follow the Regular meeting. All at the COD.
8/23-24-25 RYE student weekend hosting by our club. There are seven students, 6 girls and 1 boy that will need host families for Friday and Saturday night . Zach Fretz will be co-ordinating this event. Sign up at the meeting on the 1st to enjoy a special event that supports our international youth through Rotary.
9/5 NO MEETING AT THE COD. Dick Schwabe, the Club Service
Chairman, has arranged for seats at the 9/5 ACES game. Signup sheet to be sent around until all seats are sold.
8/1 Golf awards, Special Recognition Awards and Mary Boucher from MCB Creative Marketing.
8/8 No meeting - please attend the Rotary Hot Dog Stand at the Minden Park Concerts in the Park or the MeFiYi fundraiser instead - both on 8/9.
8/15 The new Superintendent of the Douglas County School
District, Frankie Alvarado, will be our speaker at the COD.
8/22 District Govenor's Visit.
8/29 Paul Osserman from the YOUNG At HEART organization at
the Douglas County Community Center will be our speaker. We
are working on whether the meeting will be held at the COD or at the DCCC. Look for more information to follow.
9/5 NO MEETING AT THE COD.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
MEMBERSHIP: Marsha Leeg and June DeTurk - Every Rotarian is responsible for bringing in potential members. Marsha shared the procedures which will be followed for prospective new members and mentoring new members for their first six months. Marsha and June will be working on developing corporate members as well as following up with Rotary speakers as potential new members.
YOUTH SERVICES: Jim Hales - Youth Services focuses on RYLA, RYE (Rotary Youth Exchange), Interact and the Speech and Music contests. Jim wants to add a third RYLA student. Zach will be heading up RYE.
COMMUNITY SERVICES: Graham Rodney - Focus will be on getting Rotarians and the Rotary name out in the community. Currently this includes Minden Concerts in the Park, Project Santa Claus, Food Closet distribution and Death Ride swag production. Let Graham know if you see other opportunities - especially a $5k project for a district grant. Current committee members include Alex Uribe, Pat Garrahan and Lori Breyer.
PROGRAMS: Skip Pardee and Tim DeGhelder are currently co-chairs and are looking for one more person to join in the fun of providing interesting speakers for our weekly meetings.
Kaylee and Jacob talked about their RYLA experience
Two local students share their recent RYLA experience
This summer, two Douglas High School students were selected to attend the local RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award/Academy) for 5 1/2 days in Portola, California with other students from Rotary District 5190.
Jacob's interest in participating in RYLA stemmed from his past two years in his leadership class. He describes himself as shy and is trying to improve on that aspect. During RYLA, he enjoyed getting to know other participants and now his "phone contacts are filled up." The team building activities deepened this aspect. Jacob shared that he grew a lot from the group discussions. Jacob's goal was "to learn and improve myself to hopefully improve the world." Jacob's parents were both at the Rotary meeting and his mom shared that Jacob "took it upon himself because he knew that is where he wanted to grow."
Kaylee shared that "RYLA was not what I expected." She said she learned you can't judge a person because you don't know who they are and she learned to be more vulnerable. She most enjoyed meeting new people and improving her communication skills. She also "learned to be more involved and help who I can." When asked what the most important quality of a leader is, Kaylee spoke about two aspects "communication and getting ideas clear" as well as "engagement - hearing and acknowledging people's opinion." Kaylee will expand her Rotary experience as a part of Interact - a Rotary club at the high school level.
Pa Wa Lu Principal Guy Olguin receives a check from the Minden Rotary Club Foundation for an additional AED to be located on the opposite side of campus from the nurse's office to fulfill a location need from Foundation Director Howard Vipperman.

The newest member of the Minden Rotary Club - welcome to Gantt Miller! Gantt's father was a lifetime Rotarian and his brother-in-law is a Rotarian on the East Coast who has spent many years leading in the area of Rotary Youth Exchange.
Members of the Minden Rotary Club helped fold t-shirts and put together swag bags for the annual Death Ride in Markleeville in early July.
