UPDATE FROM OUR RYE OUTBOUND STUDENT SAMANTHA BROWN

Second month has been finished!

At the start of the month I went with Fran to her Host Dads sisters house in Arkösund. We went out on a boat ride and got a quick tour of what islands there are. Then we went on a walk around one of the islands, had lunch and fika, then started to head back to their house. When we made it to their house we made a blueberry and peach pie. Was a very busy day.

Then on the 5th I went and saw Beetlejuice in Swedish which was super fun. Our theater here looks super cool! I went to the play with my host mom and some of the people from my second family as well.

Me and Fran went with my host mom on a little like farmers market thing but you need to drive between the places. We had tons of fun, went to a yarn/wool place, an orchard like place, and an almost farm but not quite.

Later that night Frans host club had a party celebrating 40 years as a club. There was a lot of people, most from her club. At the party we had done a quiz with questions about the club, we had met lots of people, and there was lots of toasts to people as well.

Next thing that I had done this month was going to the Kreftfeva for the exchange students in Norrköping, Linköping, and Nyköping. It was fun, played pool with some of the exchange students. We had a little quiz on who we though would win the challenges, but we didn't know that there would be a twist on them. So it was like who is the strongest, but it wasn't said in what way, so it was who was able to keep a feather in the air the longest. During the night we had crayfish, which wasn't good in my opinion, and we also had fermented herring that I tried a little bit of but it didn't smell good at all, and didn't taste any better,

On the 15th I went to Frans to help with making apple juice. Right now it is apple season in Sweden, so everyone is making things with apples, like apple juice, apple pie, apple sauce, etc.

I also went to my first Rotary meeting this month. It was interesting, definitely different.

Then with school on the 17th we had Don't Drive Drunk. During that we had firefighters, police, and health people talk to us, didn't understand all of it. We were able to go inside of the firetruck, get out of a flipped vehicle, and have the feeling of slamming on the breaks.

Then on the 20th about 13 of the exchange students went down to Gothenburg for the weekend. I arrived on Friday night and didn't do much other than walk to the place that we were staying in and having dinner. Saturday we all went to Lisaburg which is the famous amusement park in Gothenburg, went on a lot of rides there, had lunch and then went back at about 6pm. We had a group picture and then ate pizza. Then after that I had played cards with a couple others. On Sunday we packed up to be out of there by 10 and then we went on a bus that was also a boat, which was super fun, got a quick tour of the city. Then took the train back afterwards.

Partnership Douglas County is a nonprofit coalition founded in 1993 to bring new substance-abuse programs to the community, while attempting to eliminate duplicative services among provider agencies. PDC is one of ten such coalitions in Nevada and is the only one located in Douglas County. PDC can apply for funds and then is able to fund other nonprofits as a pass through to assist DC residents. PDC works with youth organizations, law enforcement/judicial, schools, civic and volunteer groups, media, State/local government, healthcare, business community and faith-based organizations. PDC receives primarily funding through federal and state funding sources, with very little coming from donations.

PDC does a lot of behavioral health advocacy work, which is the combination of mental health and substance abuse disorders, through outreach and education and help with some policies. They do substance abuse education within the schools in the community. PDC runs an Empowering Youth group at the high schools and middle schools that teaches drug prevention, leadership skills, activities, visits to the legislature and opportunity to attend a youth camp.

One of the programs highlighted was “Catch my Breath” which is for students caught Vaping and other forms of smoke-related activities, in school. “Catch my Breath” diverted students to an educational curriculum instead of getting suspended. Surveys taken in 2021 and 2023 by Douglas County teens (13-17) identified Vaping as the number one issue impacting them. In 2023, issues impacting teens, from 1 (most impacted) - 10 (least impacted) were: Vaping, Anxiety/Stress, Bullying/Shaming, Mental Health, Alcohol, Depression, Racism, Marijuana, Violence and Other.

Upcoming events for PDC:

Prescription Drug Round-up will be on October 19th 10a-2p at the DC Sheriff’s Office (1038 Buckeye Rd, Minden). In April, PDC collected over 500 pounds of expired drugs (OTC and prescription - no needles, explosives), in partnership with the DCSO.

Do Good with Chipotle Valid only in Carson City Chipotle, help us raise funds to support youth drug prevention efforts and programs within Douglas County. Mark your calendars, spread the word, and join us on October 26th!

Trunk or Treat is on October 31st from 3-8p at the DCSO is a safe alternative to trick or treating. Join us for an afternoon filled with games, music, and tons of Halloween fun! This event is drug and alcohol-free to ensure a safe and fun environment for all.

Daria is a sixth generation Nevadan who started at Partnership DC at the age of 17. She received an AA from Western NV College and a BS from Sam Houston State University. She is the Executive Director of Partnership DC and is the youngest ED of a nonprofit in Nevada.

27th some of the exchange students from another program and the Rotary student from Linköping came to Norrköping to go out to dinner and then to the kulturnatt. After dinner we walked over to watch a fire performance, then walked over to a concert. Then after all that we had walked over to the train station to wish the other exchange students goodbye.

On the 28th I had my volleyball series prelims, we sadly lost both of our games. In between the matches I had gone over to the Rotary fundraiser at the concert hall. The students from Nyköping had come up and the one from Linköping had just stayed the night here.

Then on the 29th the students in Norrköping and the one from Linköping and one of the students from the other program went to Kolmården, a zoo here in Sweden. It was super fun, saw lots of animals, and went on one of the rollercoasters there called Wildfire. Went to a dolphin show which was interesting. Then went on the gondolas and from up there saw all of the animals.

Feels like I have been here for far more than two months. Getting the language down better and better everyday.
