THE MAGIC OF GIVING TO THE ROTARY FOUNDATION

Fellow Rotarian Ken Miller was the honored speaker at our meeting this week.  Ken gave us an update on the Rotary Foundation.  Did you know…

• The Rotary Foundation is not the same as Rotary International?

• When you give to the Rotary Foundation, it gives back to you, transforming your gifts into grants for programs and projects that change lives, both close to home and around the world.
• You can give to the Foundation in general or request funds are directed specifically towards:
  • Polio vaccines (PolioPlus)
  • Grants for local (think District Grants) and international humanitarian projects, scholarships and activities (SHARE)
• Endowment Funds can be specified in your estate plan, life insurance or outright gift.  Rotary only spends the earnings.
• Recognition is awarded for:
  • $25/year - the club is recognized if every Rotarian in the club donates at least $25/year (“Every Rotarian Every Year”)
  • $100/year - sustaining member
  • $100/year to Polio Plus - Polio Plus Society Eligible
  • $1000 cumulative - Paul Harris Fellow
  • $1000/year - Paul Harris Society Eligible
  • $1000/year in will or trust - Benefactor
  • $10,000+ cumulative- Major Donor
  • $10,000+ in a single gift - Major Gift
  • $10,000+ in will or trust - Bequest Society
  • $250,000+ - Arch Klumpf Society

Where do your contributions go?  Here are some of the ways YOUR donation may

create magic …

• Save a child from contracting polio
• Allow a young girl to finish school
• Support children rescued from human trafficking
• Provide a man or woman the means to start a business
• Teach a veteran a new skill to sustain his/her livelihood or community
• Clean up and support a community devastated by fire or floods or hurricane or war – close to home or far away

It was unanimously voted on by both the Past Presidents and the entire club that Pat Garrahan will be our next club President in 2026-27.  What a perfect way to start our second century!

One of our hundred projects!  Rotarians Sam Steele, Zach Fretz and Graham Rogney volunteered to bartend for the Minden Fortnightly Annual Fundraiser. Rotarians Gantt Miller, Kory Miller and Lori Breyer assisted the Fortnightly efforts with purchases of auction and raffle. “The Minden Fortnightly is a service club comprised of 35 women dedicated to supporting programs that benefit the Carson Valley community and maintaining the historic CVIC Hall. Each fall the members of Minden Fortnightly conduct a community fundraiser and auction in order to support the many local causes that they value.”  The service club was established in 1910 - 16 years before the Minden Rotary Club!

Rotarian Pat Garrahan went shopping with the Carson Valley 20/30 club for Thanksgiving dinners for the Family Support Council to distribute to families in need.  Rotary purchased five turkeys and the fixings for complete meals.  The 20/30 club purchased an additional 20 turkeys with the fixings.

An update from our Italian Rotary Youth Exchange student - Danila Florio

“…things are getting much better now. I’m more fluent in the language (though I still have a lot to learn), and I feel like I’m really enjoying the experience now because I have more friends and I’m getting used to the U.S. This winter I’m going to try skiing because I’ve never done it before, and I can’t wait! Also, school is getting easier now that I’m improving with the language, and above all, I finally figured out the school system since it’s very different from Italy. I hope it keeps going well, and maybe even gets better—especially because I’m going to change host family and will have a host sister my age, which I’m really excited about (obviously I am enjoying being with Zach and his family but of course I think having a host sister would be very fun)!”

The Rotary Club of Minden is happy to welcome the following new members:

• Ric Casper is a graduate from Carson City High (but is quick to add his 3 kids all graduated from Douglas High).  He attended BYU as an undergraduate and Yale Law School.  He worked for the US Attorney's office for 4 years before coming back home and working for the Douglas County District Attorney's Office.
• Loral Langemeier from Live Out Loud Publishing.  Loral has 2 kids (Logan age 25 and Tristan age 18).  She is a graduate of Nebraska Wesleyan, has an MA from Omaha and is a writer.  AND she's dating President Graham.
• Eric Barter from Bad Boys Bail Bonds (Past President from the Rotary Club of Arcadia).  See the October 23rd newsletter for Eric's craft talk.
• Daniel Crawford, sponsored by Howard Vipperman. It was said he is the first native American to become a member in the Rotary Club of Minden. He is a Douglas County native, spent time in Diamond Valley, graduated from school in Douglas, served on tribal council, works for Washoe Native TANF as the project and resource specialist, and attended Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence Kansas.

12/4 - Town of Gardnerville Christmas Kickoff/ Gazebo Lighting (Heritage Park) - need volunteers to serve hot cocoa and cake - more information to come

12/5 - Minden Park Gazebo Lighting, 5-7pm Rotarians can assist at CVIC hall

12/5 - Genoa Christmas kick off

12/6 - Genoa Breakfast with Santa

12/6 - Holiday Museum Gala - free admission at the Gardnerville museum - volunteers needed during the event

12/6 - CV Chamber Parade of Lights, 5-8pm - we will put together a float (Holiday Hoedown theme) - more information to come

12/12 FOOD DRIVE, 6am - 6pm – Channel 2 Share your Christmas Drive by Food Drive - all day at the Carson Valley Inn - Rotarians can make donations or assist with the food drive

12/13 Wreath Across America at Buckeye and Douglas County Cemeteries, 9am - Includes a ceremony for Veterans and wreaths placed on gravestones.  Rotarians needed to help with parking prior to the event at Eastside Memorial Park (1600 Buckeye Road)

12/19 (6-9pm), 12/20 (9am-1pm) - Project Santa Claus Toy Distribution - DC Fairgrounds - Rotarians help organize, wrap and distribute toys

12/20 (2pm - 8pm) Corley Ranch Christmas at the Corral - train rides, horse rides, craft and food vendors, hayrides, Santa photos, live music, silent auction - volunteer opportunities to be determined.
