Rotary Speech Contestants Natalle Sandoval and Jack Esterby
ROTARY SPEECH CONTEST INCLUDES STUDENTS FROM MINDEN AN CARSON CLUBS
The Rotary Club of Minden hosted the second level of the annual District 5190 Rotary Speech Contest on April 16th at the C.O.D. This contest is a group of speakers from various northern Nevada clubs and is organized by Jim Hales, the Rotary Club Youth Services Coordinator. The winner of this competition moves on to compete in the Area Speech contest held in Reno with participants from northern Nevada and northern California.
Contestants are given a random order in which to speak before the club. The judges were non- Rotarians from the community. Eight different categories having to do with presentation, content, organization and clarity of their message are part of the scoring. This year’s theme for the speech was “Unite For Good: Together, We Make Dreams Come True.”
Three students were to speak but one had the good excuse of an interview at George Washington University and was excused. Rotarians were instructed to hold their applause after each speaker in order to avoid influencing the judging. Speakers were identified and judged by a number only. After the tabulations were completed and the cash awards were given each contestant was introduced to loud applause.
The first place $200 check was given to freshman Jack Esterby, an aspiring thespian/actor, whose talk began with an engaging question about epic movies. Historical, epic and mythological movie themes take tremendous amounts of time, collaboration, teamwork, money, people and effort. One of Jack’s examples was of producing an epic movie, the Titanic. He said that there were over 18,150 people involved in making Titanic, which illustrated the point that cooperation, working together and backing each other up can result in greatness, not just in movies, but in all aspects of life. Families, friends, teachers, and teams by working together can “make a dream into a reality.” Using the phrase: “teamwork is dream work” Jack said that this is where people can reach their true potential.
The second speaker was Hannah Sandoval who spoke passionately about inflation, something that has been around since our early history. Her examples of how inflation caused people to unite and work together for the better interest.
Not surprisingly, both of the speakers are interested in creativity, especially through the film industry with focus on acting for Jack and producing for Hannah.
As Jack concluded with a quote from Walt Disney “team work makes dreams work!”
