KIDS FISHING DERBY

-------------

COMPUTER CORPS

Computer Corps Ron Norton with President Marsha and Dave Rich

The Rotary Club of Minden had two very informative presentations at its meeting this week...

KIDS FISHING DERBY

This legacy event is returning June 1-2, 2024 to Lampe Park after a three year hiatus. The non-profit organization made up of a small army of volunteers are always looking for volunteers or donations for the event. For children 3-12 years old, pre-registration is required at AJ’s Stoves or Accolades Trophies. They are selling raffle tickets for over 1,000 raffle prizes for 6 for $10 and include a discount at Woodette’s for a waffle plate. Some of the top prizes include a kayak and a charter fishing expedition on Tahoe. They will provide poles, bait, fishing help, fish cleaning, and just about everything a child could need to successfully catch and clean a fish at Lampe Park that day. For more information email kfdvolunteers@aol.com or visit their Facebook page or their webpage. Volunteer registration packets are available online.

Each child is allowed a 2 fish limit, and prizes are awarded for tagged fish and for the biggest fish. Every child leaves with a prize. Fish come from Mason Valley, and Oregon. After the event the fish are scooped up and taken to reservoirs in Carson Valley to be stocked for fishing.

COMPUTER CORPS – EVERY HOME A CLASSROOM

Ron Norton started Computer Corp 27 years ago, after his father-in-law learned how to use a computer and get online at the age of 74. He and his wife realized there were other people out there who could open their world and mind with the help of a computer.

They try to reuse more than they recycle, to keep components out of the landfill. They now distribute over 1,000 computers per month. Working with children, and adults with disabilities is their priority. Anyone who volunteers for 48 hours will receive a fully functional computer (average cost is $94), and they find that after volunteering people, especially the disabled population, have learned a new skill and can leverage that knowledge into a job.

In addition to the volunteers and public offerings, they also have corporate clients they work with. CC provides certified data destruction and helps recover data when a computer has been damaged by a disaster like fire or hurricane.

Anywhere from 20-40 people volunteer per day across their 6 locations, and everyone is fed. Many people can take food home to their families and loved ones.

HEIDI TAKES FIRST PLACE!!

Thanks to all my supporters, and the wonderful work that Suicide Prevention Network does, I came in first place in fundraising almost $15,000, and because I raised the most money for SPN, my amazing partner Oliver Adams and I took 2nd in the dancing competition out of a 5-way tie. A generous, anonymous donor matched the funds raised that night up to $50,000!

The annual Gotta Dance event is a community favorite, and I was honored to participate this year as a ‘Celebrity Dancer'. We put on our Troll doll costumes, danced to Can’t Stop the Feeling by Justin Timberlake, and had an absolute blast dancing in front of 600 people at the community center.

A huge congratulations to all the dancers this year, especially Eric Jacobs and his partner Erica Chip-Adams for their perfect 10’s as Ken and Barbie."
