New from OUTBOUND exchange student Samantha Brown in Sweden:

February has finished, one month closer to the finish line
This month I moved into my third host family, they are very nice. The day after, I had a volleyball championship to go to nationals, we did not make it, we came in fourth. The weekend after, I had one of my friends from Stockholm come down and stay the night. Then I had sports break, went skiing, which was super fun, but I fell quite often. I also went up to Stockholm and Uppsala. It was very fun to see Uppsala, it's very pretty. Then came last weekend, I had a volleyball game in Norrköping, it was my second to last game with this team. Then on the 1st of March, I met up with some of the other exchange students for lunch and fika.
P.S: The photos are of some of my volleyball team members, and me and my host mom.

STATE OF THE UNION (CLUB) ADDRESS

This week, President Sam shared information on the Minden Rotary club's progress for this year since the July 1, 2004 beginning of the year and asked for input:

1. Food Closet (10 man hours at 5 events) & Death Ride (25 man hours and 5 people).

2. Socials through Sports (UNR and ACES)

3. Hot Dogs @ Concert in Minden Concerts in the Park (3 events, 6-8 people, 25 man hours)

4. Community Support @ Sheriff's Advisory Council Dinner, Library Gala Diner, MeFiYi Fundraiser Dinner)

5. Project Santa Claus - New idea is to work on bicycles in collaboration with other service clubs in Carson Valley.

6.  Club Meetings have included a social once a month.  Input was to continue this at the same location on the last meeting of the month from 5-7pm.  The Overland may be that location.  A consistent location would allow us to post the location in the paper.

7. Giving Cup Golf Tournament - brings in $30-$35k each year.  Last year, there was over 110 people at the dinner/auction after the tournament.  There was a discussion on an alternative fundraiser should interest in this fundraiser decrease in future years.  The Rotary magazine may be a good source of ideas.

8.  Super Bowl Pancake Breakfast (8 Rotarians/ 30 hours) - first year funded picnic tables and umbrellas near the Pickleball courts at the Douglas Co Community Center.  Year 2 funded sun shades for the Pickleball Courts.  Year 3 might fund a summer kids program at the Courts.

9. Chili Cook Off - 6 people and 25 man hours.  It was noted that Graham was robbed of the first place title this year.

10. District Grant - this year the program funded 5th grade books referencing Anonyms and Synonyms.  18 man hours were involved.  Looking for ideas for next year.

In total, Minden Rotary People in Action - 19 Rotarians participated in 15 projects involving 185 volunteer hours.

11. Coming Up:

  - Lampe Park / Willow Creek Cleanup (March)

  - Book Pillows for local 2nd graders (April/May)

  - Par course refurbishment (March-June)

  - Buddy Benches (March-June)

  - Green Our Planet Farmers Market (5/15)

  - Golf Tournament (5/17)

"IF YOU CAN DREAM IT, WE CAN DO IT"
