Monday's Program

Classification Talks

Today we will hear from our esteemed fellow Rotarians, Stacy Klingler, and Ursula Miniter.

Last Monday's Program

Katelyn Darling and Megan Shanafelt were here with the Bison Bridge Foundation to share an overview of the project and the current status of the bridge. Katelyn is the project coordinator for the Bison Bridge Foundation and brings with her 15+ years of hospitality and tourism background knowledge into the project. Megan has worked with this project and Living Lands and Waters for the last several years with social media and marketing for both foundations.

Katelyn Darling and Megan Shanafelt from the Buffalo Bridge Foundation

Chad Pregracke from Living Lands and Water has been working on this concept for the last 10 years.  There are approximately 42,000 cars a day that travel over the Mississippi river on 1-80 so there will be lots of exposure for this project.  The initial plans are to acquire 100 acers on each side of the current I80 bridge and have that area plus the bridge available for grazing for the bison.  The bridge will primarily be a walkway for the bison, not a grazing area.  There will be about 8-10 bison in the area so they will have a safe habitat with plenty of food.  So not the herds of buffalo people may be picturing.  The plan is to have one side of the bridge walled off for the bison and the other side is a pedestrian walkway with walking and bicycle paths (I will get her to send me the slides so we can have their pictures).  They are currently working with students from University of Illinois and Iowa State University. They are still in phase 1 of project development and currently are in an information gathering and information presenting phase.  One of the biggest comments they have heard is that people in this area want a bridge with pedestrian access, with local running and biking clubs supporting this project.  With this bridge and the current I74 bridge you can form a nice loop all around the quad cities.  Go to the I-80 Mississippi River Bridge website to leave a comment and get information on the overall bridge project https://www.i80mississippibridge.com/

For more information visit the bison bridge foundation website at https://bisonbridge.org/ or visit them on all the social media sites.

Moline Rotary Softball Team

Jim Rabchuk is looking to form a Moline Rotary softball team for the Moline Park District Fall Adult Mixed Softball League as a member of a Moline Rotary/WIU QC 12 inch softball team. https://secure.rec1.com/IL/moline-il/catalog (Note that the cost is incorrect in this linked document, and should be $310.)

Please note: We are up against a tight deadline to decide! Registration for new teams in the league can begin starting on Tuesday, June 28th. The league begins on Sunday, August 21st, and we need to have our roster by August 15th. The league lasts six weeks, and we would play a double header each Sunday.

For mixed league, we need to field a team of 5 male and 5 female players, and bat alternating genders. I want to be sure that we'll have at least 2x that many possible participants to make sure that we can field a team each week. I am making the team a combined effort of Rotary and WIU to help ensure we'll have enough players.

Please contact Jim at ja-rabchuk@wiu.edu by Monday, June 27th if you are interested in participating.

Poor Mike!

Laura told the club we received word that Mike Steffenson broke his leg while traveling in Germany.  We are sending healing vibes his way and circulated a card for him.

FYI

Incoming President Laura Davis went over the different between the Moline Rotary Foundation and the RI Foundation.  The Moline Rotary Foundation is the local foundation and you can donate to that through birdies.  Donations go to Literacy, Community Needs and Scholarships.  Rotary International foundation is the international foundation for all of Rotary.  Donations there go to Polio, Annual Fund or the Disaster relief fund (which is currently going to Ukraine).

Looking for help with the SMILE
We are looking for someone to share their love of writing by helping with The Smile each week. Anyone interested in taking notes, writing a brief summary of our weekly speaker’s presentation, providing information on what’s upcoming, and working with the editor to create The Smile each week should contact Laura Davis.

Rotarian of the Year
Do you know someone who has gone above and beyond for Moline Rotary this year? Members have been continuing their support of the Club, both monetarily and through service as we have navigated through Covid and transitioned to our new normal. If you have someone in mind that you think should be recognized as Rotarian of the year, contact Laura Davis or another Board member as soon as possible.

A new round of 50/50 has started! Deni and Phil’s numbers were called but neither pulled the 9 of clubs so the pot rolls forward to next week. You can't win if you don't play! Contact our esteemed Sergeant at Arms, Mark Carlson for your entry tickets before each meeting!
