Happy Monday Moline Rotarians!

WE HAVE A MEETING ROOM CHANGE TODAY:

Our meeting will still be held at Trinity Lutheran Church today, however, we are meeting in the opposite side of the building in Faith Hall. This meeting change is a result of a funeral being held at the Church today. Please feel free to park closest to the Faith Hall entrance of the building today.

Our speaker will be Dave Markward. According to Amazon.com (where you can purchase his book), "Dave Markward is a district consultant for School Administrators of Iowa, supervisor of clinical education students at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, and an assistant editor for the American Society of Quality Newsletter, Quality Approaches in Education. He received his undergraduate degree from Augustana College, his master’s and educational specialist degrees from Western Illinois University, and his Doctor of Education degree from Illinois State University.

Before retiring from full-time service, Dave served as the Superintendent of Schools in Rock Island, Illinois and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. During his 38-year career as a public school educator, he also worked as a biology teacher, assistant high school football and track coach, assistant high school principal, elementary school principal, curriculum director, and assistant superintendent. Regardless of title or position, he first and foremost considers himself a teacher. Dave has consulted with school districts and presented at numerous state and national conferences on topics ranging from brain-compatible instruction to district organization and effectiveness.".

Please join us as we welcome Dave Markward on the 9th of January and hear more about his experiences and his recently published book "Free the Teachers".

A Message from President Tim Smith

Dear Rotarians,
I would like to wish all of you a joyous Holiday Season.

As we reflect on 2016, we are able to share in many joys and changes for our club. We have established our own 501c3, and continue to do several community events to share who we are as Rotarians.

I am humbled to lead and be a part of this rich heritage. During these long winter days until we meet again in January 2017, I hope you enjoy family, friends, peace and joy.

May all of you celebrate the season and remember how amazing your efforts are to those who need our Service Above Self.

God Bless,

— Tim

Highlights from December 19

Holiday traditions and fun were the theme of last Monday’s Moline Rotary Club social meeting.

Special guests included Mark Steele and his son James, the family of member Karla Steele, and the current host family for Japanese exchange student Tenfu Matsushita. Tenfu reported on his great weekend trip to Chicago with the Steeles, including visiting the amazing Mitsuwa Marketplace in Arlington Heights, an authentically Japanese market and food court, and exploring the fascinating Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.

Steve Koelz hosted his daughter, Kris Koelz Kesterson as our guest, continuing a tradition of many years of Kris attending the Moline Rotary holiday meeting. And we again welcomed East Moline Rotarian Terry Westbrook.

Club Treasurer Deni McCarter reported on the current financial condition of the club, noting that the club is doing fiscally well at this point in the year. Deni also announced that member Kent Crippen has agreed to serve as the treasurer for the Moline Rotary Foundation.

Gary Francque reminded members of the 2017 Resolution Run, a 5K Run/Walk scheduled for New Years Day at 1:00pm to benefit Youth Hope the Moline youth center directed by member Mark Drake. Runners and volunteers are still needed. Visit www.cfyouthhope.org for more information.

Club fun master Geoff Manis kicked off the activities with a survey of the best and worst holiday traditions. Topics included the best & worst food dish at your holiday feast, the best and worst memories of the holiday, the best and worst gifts, and more. Members recalled their memories and told stories about their families’ traditions, and then each table shared some of the best from the group. Highlights included: JC Millman proposing to his wife on Christmas Eve, Jim Gale’s annual holiday family puzzles, and Tom Bracke’s family’s tradition of announcing a surprise holiday trip on Christmas morning. Best foods included many delicious holiday traditions, and it was agreed by many that the worst food must be “Lutefisk” the Norwegian / Swedish dish commonly referred to as “rotten fish”. Yuk!

After some great holiday memories were enjoyed it was time for the 2016 Holiday Gift Wrapping Contest. President Tim Smith, Sergeant at Arms Jim Nelson, and member Gary Francque were recruited to participate in tastefully wrapping a large gift box in the least amount of time. Despite Tim Smith’s distraction antics, the other two competitors gave a good effort, but President Smith prevailed with the most attractive gift wrap job! Gary Francque invited members to bring all of their holiday gifts to Tim’s house for a great gift wrap! Thank you Tim! (See more photos of our holiday meeting on www.molinerotary.org under Photo Albums / 2016 Meetings and Presenters.)

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!

News You Can Use

Dictionary Delivery Dates Set: Each year, Moline Rotary is proud to provide a dictionary to each third grader in the Moline-Coal Valley School District.  Though we call the book a ‘dictionary’, it’s actually much more than that and includes facts and information on a host of topics from our country’s political structure to geography.  We’ve heard many stories of students keeping and using their dictionary through high school.  This year, we will personally deliver dictionaries to students on January 19 and 20.  Want to help distribute the dictionaries?  An hour of your time can have a lasting effect on our kids!  Sign-up sheets will be available at our January 9th and 16th meetings.  See Kelly Giovanine for more information.

WINE DOWN AFTER THE HOLIDAYS at The Grape Life Wine Store and Lounge in Davenport, IA. Join The Fellowship of Wining Rotarians for this post-holiday event at The Grape Life on Thursday, January 5. This will be a great way for Rotarians to meet, greet, socialize, and have FUN!  Spouses, friends, prospective members invited and encouraged to attend! When: Thursday, January 5, 2017. 6 PM or earlier. Stay for live Jazz music by Phat Kat beginning at 7 PM.
