The SMILE for Monday, March 13, 2017 | Vol. 103 | No. 35

Editor: Jodie Corey Behrens   |  Webmaster: Jeff VanEchaute

For my part I know nothing with any certainty, but the sight of the stars makes me dream. — Vincent Van Gogh
This Week

Monday's speaker is Astrophotographer Richard Hammar. Attorney, financial expert and author by day -  astronomer by night - Richard Hammar is a premier astrophotographer in the Springfield, Missouri area. He became hooked on astronomy after taking a single look at Saturn through his brother’s 4 inch reflector when he was in high school. His first telescope was a Celestron 8″ SCT. Over the years he has purchased several other telescopes, and built a 6″ reflector (including polishing the mirror). Join us as he shares his passion of the stars through his camera lens.

Last Week

Amber Wood, Executive Director of the Quad Cities Chapter of the American Red Cross was our speaker last week. March is American Red Cross Month, and our local chapter is celebrating 100 years of service in this area. With over 450 volunteers, our local Red Cross provides Disaster Relief, First Aid, CPR and Disaster Preparedness Education, Service to the Armed Forces, International Services, and Blood/Biomedical services through blood drives.

The key campaign for 2017 is to prevent home fire deaths by 25% nationwide through the Home Fire Campaign. Through education and the free installation of smoke alarms, the hope is to save lives, reduce injuries, and build resilient communities. Free smoke alarms are provided and installed by appointment at getasmokealarm.org, or by calling 844-319-6560 (press 9). A group of three volunteers will show up to not only install the smoke alarm, but to educate the home owner about fire safety and to help them identify the safest escape routes in case of a fire.

She reminds us all to remember to test our smoke alarms monthly and to practice a home fire escape plan. We are grateful to outstanding organizations like the Red Cross, and to dedicated professionals like Amber -- thank you!

News You Can Use

We were treated to quite a moving event last week! Two of our MHS students, Aaron Miller & Ethan Johnson, performed their Dramatic Duet Acting piece that took 7th place at State two weeks ago. It was a moving 8 minutes as the boys told the story of finding love even in the midst of profound misery in the concentration camps of World War II. Well done, Aaron and Ethan! Bravo!!

Host families are needed for the 2017-18 School year for our inbound youth exchange! We need at least one family committed before we are even considered for an inbound student for 2017-18. Search your hearts, and ask your family and friends if they can find room in their lives to host a student next year. It is said to be a wonderful experience!

Tenfu continues to sell raffle tickets for his end of year trip to the East Coast with Inbound Exchange Students throughout the district. Tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20.00. The winner of the raffle will get a traditional Japanese dinner for 4 prepared by Tenfu.

Kimberly Crane introduced the Gift Tree Basket. Tickets are on sale for $10 each or 3 for $20.00. Rotarians are encouraged to sell tickets. The Rotarian selling the most tickets will win either a quarter worth of paid dues or equal value towards the Paul Harris Foundation.

Missed your opportunity to buy tickets to the Murder Mystery Dinner on April 8, 2017? The dinner will be at CityView Celebrations at Trimble Pointe at 5 PM. Tickets may still be available for $60 a person. Space is limited to 150 guests. Buy your tickets now by contacting Kimberly Crane!

Mark your calendars: March 27th will be the State of the City Address at the i Wireless Center. Please mark your calendars for the change in venue.
