The SMILE for Monday, April 03, 2017 | Vol. 103 | No. 38

Editor: Jodie Corey Behrens   |  Webmaster: Jeff VanEchaute

The maple syrup's full of ants.
A mouse is creeping on the shelf.
Is that a spider on your back?
I ate the whole pie by myself.
The kitchen sink just overflowed.
A flash flood washed away the school.
I threw your blanket in the trash.
I never lie----I---
April Fool!

This Week
We will welcome Dale Pierce from Blaze Restoration. Blaze has been a family run business since 1995. The business has expanded a great deal through the years with current locations in the Quad Cities and Galesburg. We welcome Dale to the meeting this Monday and look forward to hearing more about Blaze Restoration.

Last Week

State of the City
Last week we were the host club for the annual State of the City Address by the City of Moline Staff at the iWireless Center. The event was well attended, and the presentation was particularly well put together and interesting this year. Our own club president, Tim Smith, kicked off the meeting and handed it over to Mayor Scott Raes, and Moline's Planning and Development Director, Ray Forsythe for the extensive presentation.

The City of Moline has several major projects already underway, and many more in the works in the near future. Highlights of the presentation were:

- I-74 Bridge: The perennial I-74 bridge update shows the project finally getting down to business. Work on the actual structure will start this year with the pouring of the massive footings in the river. The bridge is fully funded, bids are being let for the various construction phases, and real progress should start to show real soon. One small fact that is hard to get your head around: the new bridge's arches will rise 84-feet higher than the top of the current bridge!

- John Deere Road: Progress is being made and the next two years will see a lot of construction activity in the corridor as this major thoroughfare is widened to 3 lanes and every intersection gets improved.

- The Q: Building and remodeling is under way on the Q. With the old O'Roark building at its core, the Q will be adding new retail, public meeting space in a 2-story Grand Hall, and an Element Hotel to the Chicago to Moline train station.

- Fifth Avenue Building: Heart of America plans to turn the proud Moline landmark into the area's first 5-star hotel.

- Chase Bank Building: Renovations continue to convert the once busy office building into much needed downtown housing with 31 market-rate apartments.

- Dolan development on Avenue of the Cities: The corner of AoC and 27th Street will soon become the site of new retail shopping and apartment living.

- Speigel Building: Will become housing and first floor retail, and is the first project in what will be newly created riverfront property when the old I-74 bridge and supporting structures are removed.

- New eateries on the way: Olive Garden, Popeye's Chicken, and Panda Express are all on the way to the John Deere Road corridor.

There was so much more. Moline is on the move, and the future looks bright!

Host families are needed for the 2017-18 School year for our inbound youth exchange! We need at least one family committed before we are even considered for an inbound student for 2017-18. Search your hearts, and ask your family and friends if they can find room in their lives to host a student next year. It is said to be a wonderful experience!

Don't forget to bring a bottle of wine to the meeting this Monday! The wine is a donation for the Wine Pull at the Murder Mystery Dinner.  Monday is the last meeting before the dinner so it's your last chance if you want to contribute!  Thank you!

Who do you know who could benefit from a Rotary Membership? Did you know that Rotarians can be professionals, community volunteers, and/or retired? Throughout the years the definition of a Rotarian has changed. So, who can be a Rotarian? We recently took this question to our District Governor, Scott Shore. Scott replied with a host of citations from the Rotary International By-Laws and the Rotary Code of Policies and Standard Club Constitution. As of 2016, the policies state that club members can be full or part time professionals, community service volunteers including stay-at-home parents or those who serve the community but do not identify with a particular profession, and retirees. The newest version of who a Rotarian can be opens new doors to the Moline Rotary Club and our membership. Do you know of a valuable member of our community who would enjoy Rotary? If so, invite them to a meeting and introduce them to a new way to serve.

Kimberly Crane introduced the Gift Tree Basket. Tickets are on sale for $10 each or 3 for $20.00. Rotarians are encouraged to sell tickets. The Rotarian selling the most tickets will win either a quarter worth of paid dues or equal value towards the Paul Harris Foundation.

Missed your opportunity to buy tickets to the Murder Mystery Dinner on April 8, 2017? The dinner will be at CityView Celebrations at Trimble Pointe at 5 PM. Tickets may still be available for $60 a person. Space is limited to 150 guests. Buy your tickets now by contacting Kimberly Crane!

Smile a While

Funny words you probably didn’t know. (source: Dictionary.com)

Bumfuzzle
[buhm-fuhz-uhl]
Bumfuzzle means to confuse or fluster, from the southern US. This would make a good name for a puppy. “Bumfuzzle! Come here, boy!” Not to be confused with San Francisco Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner, who is also from the south.

Kerfuffle
[ker-fuhf-uhl]
Kerfuffle is pretty popular. It is a British word meaning a fuss; commotion. “The gas price hike caused quite a kerfuffle.” Why does this sound like a word they’d use in Minnesota or North Dakota? Think: the movie Fargo. “Yah, Margie. Big kerfuffle today, for sure.”

Snollygoster
[snol-ee-gos-ter]
Not generally used in contemporary culture, but we have a definition so we’re going with it. A snollygoster is a “clever, unscrupulous person.” Since the word dates back to the late 1840s, you can kind of imagine Mark Twain using it in one of his tall tales. Not to be confused with a snallygaster, a mythical dragon-like creature that lurks around Washington D.C.
The Four-Way Test: Of the things we think, say, or do: Is it the Truth? Is it Fair to all concerned? Will it build Good Will and Better Friendships? Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?
