FOOD 4 KNOWLEDGE on MONDAY

Monday, January 23rd, will be a Food 4 Knowledge luncheon.

The Food 4 Knowledge luncheon is a week where we as Rotarians take a day from our normal elaborate lunch and instead, enjoy a simple bowl of soup and/or salad. We eat on paper products and we accept a simple meal in turn to give the savings to those that are not as fortunate as we are. Several weeks ago we learned from Alyson Ryser from Moline High School that this program is accomplishing many things for those who have less. We ARE making a difference in children in the Moline School District.

Your contribution to Food for Knowledge can be tax deductible by making a check out to the Moline Rotary Foundation and putting it in the bucket on the food table this coming week.

Living life doing service above self is our mission, giving a child the ability to learn, live and fit in the world is a gift that supports this mission. I look forward to seeing you and partaking in a simple meal that will fill the minds and bellies of many children.

News You Can Use

Upcoming Events: Monday the 20th will be a Food 4 Knowledge luncheon. As we typically do, we'll have soup and salads. The cost savings of the lunch will be donated to the Moline School District for the counselors to use to help students needing bus passes, school lunches, shoes, eyeglasses and many other necessities. Also be on the lookout for a Murder Mystery Dinner. Kimberly Crane and the Social committee are hard at work at planning this dinner. Details to follow.

Moline Rotary Foundation Giving: The projects our club has been able to take on are because of the generosity of our members. Don't forget that with the creation of our newly formed Moline Rotary Foundation, your donation is now tax-deductible. For instance, your contribution to our Food 4 Knowledge Luncheons can be tax-deductible if you make out a check to the Moline Rotary Foundation and drop it in the bucket at the head of the buffet table.

Rotary International Foundation Giving: All members of Moline Rotary should have received a letter urging you to give a minimum of $26.50 in honor of the 100th Anniversary of Rotary. This is a donation to the Rotary International Foundation (not our own club). A recent report shows that District foundation giving is down from where it should be so please help with considering a donation. The $26.50 can help not only our club, but our District reach our foundation giving goals.

Board and Officer position still needed: The Moline Rotary Board is still seeking a member in good standing to become the Sergeant-at-Arms.

The Giving Tree Update: Kimberly Crane announced that we are still looking for gift certificates to fill up our tree. The goal is to receive $5,000 or more in gift card values to raffle off to Moline Rotarians and any other interested parties. The funds raised from this project will go towards Community Needs. If you have a gift card to donate or would like to donate cash, please see Kimberly.

Smile a While

Following questions and answers were collated from last year's British GCSE exams (16 year olds)!

Q: Name the four seasons.
A:
Salt, pepper, mustard and vinegar.

Q: Explain one of the processes by which water can be made safe to drink.
A:
Flirtation makes water safe to drink because it removes large pollutants like grit, sand, dead sheep and canoeists.

Q: How is dew formed?
A:
The sun shines down on the leaves and makes them perspire.

Q: What is a planet?
A:
A body of earth surrounded by sky.

Q: What causes the tides in the oceans?
A:
The tides are a fight between the Earth and the Moon. All water tends to flow towards the moon, because there is no Water on the moon, and nature abhors a vacuum. I forget where the sun joins in this fight.

The Four-Way Test: Of the things we think, say, or do: Is it the Truth? Is it Fair to all concerned? Will it build Good Will and Better Friendships? Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?
