The SMILE for Monday,  February 26, 2018 | Vol. 104 | No. 27
The traveler sees what he sees, the tourist sees what he has come to see. — Gilbert K. Chesterton

This Week, Monday, March 5
This week's speaker will be Joe Taylor from the Quad Cities Convention and Visitors Bureau. His topic will be: What's Happening in the Quad Cities. Joe had a background in newspaper editing and reporting before joining the Quad Cities Convention and Visitors Bureau when it formed in 1990. He became CEO in 1998, so is celebrating 20 years in the position. Joe enjoys travel, reading, sports, and hiking.

Last Meeting
This week’s speaker was Luke Chandler, chief economist at Deere & Company. Luke relocated 2 ½ years ago from Sydney Australia with his wife and two young sons to join Deere. Since arriving, he and his wife have added a daughter to the family. All three of his children were born on different continents (Australia, Europe and North America.)

Luke has held his current position of chief economist since May 2017. In this position, he provides guidance, counsel and insight on global macro-economic policy and trade developments to the company’s senior management team for use in determining strategy and business direction. He is also responsible for economic, agricultural, construction and forestry forecasts and outlooks critical to regional and enterprise initiatives over both the short and long term. There is a strong outlook for the economy overall.

Regarding the short-term (2018) business conditions, there is stronger global economic growth; increased business confidence in the U.S.; trade uncertainty to due geopolitical tensions; and grain prices are remaining range bound.

The low unemployment rate is having a negative impact on growth. There is high demand for housing but a shortage of laborers. The same is true for the freight industry. Freight demand has increased by 50% but there is a lack of drivers to meet the need.

The medium term (1 – 5 year) outlook is positive. Farm income is stabilizing and global grains are re-balancing.

The #1 risk is trade and the impact that withdrawal from NAFTA will have on farming. There is increasingly more concern about having a trade war with China. The U.S. has the most to lose in a trade war and it would be a detriment for U.S. farmers.

From a world perspective, China’s growth has stabilized at around 6% - 8%. They have maintained this growth by borrowing, and their debt has increased by 330% in 10 years. India is overtaking China as the most populous country. China is an aging country and India has a lot of investment taking place. India is currently the largest tractor market in the world but it’s a very competitive market.

News You Can Use
Bill Horrell was sworn in by President Jim Nelson as our newest member. Welcome, Bill!

Guests & Visitors
Our regular visitor from the East Moline/Silvis Club, Terry Westbrook, joined us. Terry brought John Zelnio, a general contractor. John is the father of Junior Rotarian Zach Zelnio. Tim Lehman, the director of sales and marketing at Parr Instrument Company was the guest of Jim Nelson. Jim Burke was the guest of Sam Till. Mike Simons, Blaze Restoration, was the guest of Mark Carlson.

It was the last day for our Junior Rotarians. Gary Francque presented each with a certificate. Zach Zelnio thanked the club on behalf of the students.

Colin Stewart, Halenka’s host brother, will attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) for his third consecutive year. This year he will attend as a group captain. Colin announced that they are short on overnight volunteers and asked Rotarians to consider volunteering. Gary Francque has volunteered for the last several years and thoroughly enjoys the weekend. He is on the planning team and is a staff member. RYLA is an annual event held the first weekend of May at the Lorado Taft Field Campus of Northern Illinois University at Lowden State Park near Oregon, Illinois.

Halenka gave an update on her last few weeks. She went to Southern Illinois University in Carbondale on a college visit with her host family. She was surprised that they drove six hours to get there and they were still in Illinois. She can drive three hours from her home and be in Amsterdam, and a four hour drive gets her to Paris. She also attended the Sadie Hawkins dance. She said it was fun but not as fun as Homecoming. She had her first track meet this past weekend. She said it’s way better than cross country. She ran in both the 200 and 400 meter dash.

Uncorked and Uncommon is May 18th. Blaze Restoration donated the first basket for the Moline wine and food event on May 18.  Kimberly Crane reminded everyone that she is still looking for gift baskets, gift cards, and wine for the wine pull. Mark your calendars for May 18. The event will be at Trimble Pointe. Tickets are $50 and limited to the first 150 people.

Mayor Stephanie Acri, will provide a State of the City address on Monday, March 19, 2018 at the TaxSlayer Center. The meeting will take place at noon in a joint meeting of the Moline Rotary and Moline Kiwanis Clubs. There are sheets on the tables to RSVP. Please sign-up if you plan on attending.
