The SMILE for Monday, June 26, 2017 | Vol. 103 | No. 49

Editor: Jodie Corey Behrens   |  Webmaster: Jeff VanEchaute

“Go back?" he thought. "No good at all! Go sideways? Impossible! Go forward? Only thing to do! On we go!" So up he got, and trotted along with his little sword held in front of him and one hand feeling the wall, and his heart all of a patter and a pitter.” J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit

This Week

Join us for the annual Presidential farewell party in recognition of Tim Smith on Monday, June 26th at 5:30  PM (cocktails) and 6 PM (dinner). This dinner is for all Rotarians and their guests. Rotarian dinners are free, guests are $25.00. The theme is "Night at the Ballpark", dinner will be ballpark themed food. There is no ballgame the evening of the 26th so we'll have more time to enjoy the company of our fellow Rotarians.

Please RSVP to Deni McCarter at McCard15@live.com

Last Week

2017 Marks the 20th Anniversary of John Deere Sponsoring the Classic. They have had a great history of putting on one of the best events on the PGA tour. We had the pleasure of hearing from Clair Peterson, Tournament Director of the JD Classic. After hearing all the accolades the Classic has received and for any of us who have spent time out there, it's easy to be proud of having an event like this in our backyard. This past year the John Deere Classic has won the Community Engagement Award, one that they have received for 5 out of the last 8 years. Additionally, they've received the Social Media Engagement Award. Clair attributed this in large part to the many volunteers and the support from the community each year. The Classic takes over 1,000 volunteers each year and has raised over $11 Million in donations. New upgrades between 2016 and 2017 include cooling stations, free water refill stations, steps past the 18th green, improved spectator chalets next to 18, an improved media zone, a new jet to take players over to the British Open following the Classic, and an increased payout to the winner of $1 Million dollars. This year is looking to be another great year. Thanks to Clair Peterson for taking time to visit our club last Monday. It is always a highlight of the year.

News You Can Use

Birdies for Charity: Did you get your pledge in? If not, there is still time. Please contact Dan Holland if you'd like to submit your Birdie still. This year funds from our Birdies donations will go to the Community Needs Committee.

Save the dates: July 10-16, 2017. The Moline Rotary Club has the honor of marshaling the 18th hole of the Classic again this year. If you are able to volunteer, please let us know. Sign up sheets will be on the tables until we get a full slate of volunteers. We are still missing many volunteers for the weekend. Please invite friends and family!

President's Dinner Announced: The end of president Tim's year has arrived. With the end of his term, we will take an evening to celebrate all the club has accomplished this past year and to thank him for his service. Please join us on Monday, June 26th at the Modern Woodmen Stadium for a dinner out with fellow Rotarians and their guests. The evening will begin at 5:30 PM. We have the stadium to ourselves as there is no ballgame that day. Be on the lookout for an invitation to arrive in your home or work mailbox.
Congratulations to Geoff Manis on the birth of his baby girl! Geoff, his wife Jennifer and their little boy Harper welcomed a new addition to their family on June 6th. Miss Hayden Manis was 8 lbs and 5 ounces, 20 inches long. She is healthy and happily at home with her family. Mom is doing great too. Congrats Geoff and family!

Your new slate of Officers and Directors were Inducted last week. Thanks to Dave Emerick, Assistant Governor Coordinator and member of the East Moline/Silvis club for performing this service. The new year technically begins now, but you'll be seeing your first glimpse of Jim Nelson as President at the July 10th meeting. Congratulations to all the new Officers and Directors.
Community Needs Contributions: How to support the Committee. Many of you are aware of the great things being accomplished by our club through the efforts of the Community Needs Committee. This committee reviews all funding requests that come our way. They also seek out ways to support our community and allow Rotary to make a local impact. Since we began our new Rotary Club Foundation about a year ago, the funding for all Community Needs projects come out of the foundation. How do they get there and how can you help? The funds are raised through special events like Birdies, the Murder Mystery Dinner, the Wine Pull, fines, direct donations, and more. We thank you for your generous support and hope that through the tax deductible donation you can make to the foundation, you find a great benefit in the many ways we are able to support our area. Next time you make a donation to the club, feel free to write a check. You are also welcome to designate where you want your funds to go. We'll be hearing more about this topic as our new club president, Jim Nelson takes the reigns.

Smile a While

Museum Jokes:

“And this over here” croaked the 90 year old museum tour guide, “is a fossil 4 million and 69 years old, on it’s left you can see another fossil that’s 2 million and 69 years old.” “Wow! That’s really fascinating,” said a fellow in the audience, “how can you age it so accurately to the year?” “Well that’s simple” answered the old chap, “It was two million years old when I started working here 69 years ago.”

Sherlock Holmes & Watson go to a Rock Museum.
They walk around for a while when Watson notices that there is a rock that doesn't have a display name.
"What kind of rock is that?" he asked Sherlock.
"Sedimentary, my dear Watson!"

The Four-Way Test: Of the things we think, say, or do: Is it the Truth? Is it Fair to all concerned? Will it build Good Will and Better Friendships? Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?
