What we need to do is really improve energy efficiency standards, develop in full scale renewable and alternative energy, and use the one resource we have in abundance, our creativity. — Lois Capps, former US Congresswoman from California
John Thompson introduced this week’s speaker, Pam Hauman with Christian Care. Christian Care was originally established as the Rock Island Rescue Mission in 1916 by Guy Rodgers. Mr. Rodgers continued his life’s mission to serve the least, the last and the lost until his death in 1958.
Christian Care is currently located at 2209 3rd Avenue in Rock Island. Their goal is to facilitate the positive transformation of the men they service. The facility is an alcohol, drug and smoke free environment. Residents get up at 6:00 am each morning. Those who work pay $50 each week in rent. If they don’t have an income, they must provide four hours of work each week to maintain the facility. Even though they are homeless, they are encouraged to spend time with family in order to mend relationships.
Christian Care provides many services, including a community meal site, that provides meals seven days a week for any person who comes through the door; housing and programs for homeless veterans through a partnership with the VA; and housing and services to men transitioning out of prison through a partnership with the Rock Island County Probation Office to provide. Learn about these and the many other services at www.christiancareqc.org.
