Last week we heard from our freshly minted president, Laura Davis. President Laura calling her first meeting to order! Dear fellow Rotarians, Thank you for entrusting me to be your president for this year. I have a few district wide goals I want to share with everyone. First of all District Governor Laura Kann wants us to donate 1 book per club member to a local library. I have reached out to the moline public library to get a list of book suggestions but you can donate anything you feel like donating to the library. The other district goal is a youth protection policy where if we have any club member interacting one on one with any youths we will need to get a background check on the member. This is at no cost to the club member. So if anyone will be in that position pleas let me know and we can get the back ground check done. For my club goals. I set a bit of a lofty membership goal of 80 members with 2 members being under 40. We are currently at 70 members so it is an achievable but challenging goal for the year. One of the quotes I heard at the PETS training and the Rotary Convention is that the world needs more Rotarians and I am hoping we can grow the club to meet that need for the community. I also would like to focus on having more social and service projects. As we come back to the “new normal” from COVID I would like to bring back more social and fun to the club. We have the club picnic coming up and the golf outing scheduled already for socials. We can do a service project volunteering at the beer tent for the City of Moline 150th anniversary celebrate in August. I welcome any suggestions of other socials and service projects. I also want to focus on the foundation for my year. When I was the foundation chair the club made my job very easy by consistently donating to the foundation and I want to make sure that continues. I also want to make sure everyone understands the difference between the 2 foundations we discuss so we will be talking about that throughout the year. Just a reminder that the RI Foundation is the overall foundation for all of rotary worldwide and the Moline Rotary Foundation is the local foundation. Donations can be made to the RI Foundation to support the Annual Fund, Polio, and Disaster Relief funds which are currently going to Ukraine. Donations to the Moline Rotary Foundation can be made to support Community Needs, Literacy, and Scholarships for the local community. I also wanted to share with the club that we have received a district grant for this year from donations made to the Annual fund of the RI Foundation. For this district grant we will be working with the local schools to provide Narcan for the school nurses to be used in in the event of an overdose emergency. We will present this grant to the school district before the school year starts up in the fall. It is a program we hope is not needed but if it is necessary it can save a life. At my presentation last Monday, I shared a video of new Rotary President Jennifer Jones where she was talking about focusing on the care and comfort of all the members of Rotary and focusing on Inclusivity and making new members feel welcome and included in the club. I think our club already does a great job with all of that but it was a nice video to share. And of course I wanted to highlight our first woman president of Rotary.
