The SMILE for Monday, October 9, 2017 | Vol. 104 | No. 09

“There is nothing intangible about Rotary: It is reality itself. To give is to receive; to lose oneself is to find oneself; to be happy is to serve. These are old truths… for the individual… and the mass, whether application be in the exchange of goods, toil, knowledge, or love.” — The Meaning of Rotary, THE ROTARIAN, November 1921

This Week, Monday, October 9

(As of this publication date) Curtis Brooks, Operations Manager, Mississippi River Project, Rock Island District, will update us on the Rock Island District Mississippi River Project.

Last Meeting - October 2

Jim Rabchuk introduced this week’s speakers. Dr. Rob Porter (Dr. Rob), who is an associate professor at Western Illinois’ Quad City campus and Jevonnah Prashaw, the resource manager at Nahant Marsh, talked about the importance of our prairie and restoring areas to prairie land. They are currently working on a project to restore two acres of land. The reason we no longer see many monarch butterflies, wasps, and bumble bees is because they can’t pollinate. Monarch butterflies are under consideration to be added to the endangered species list. Increasing the amount of prairie will provide pollination opportunities for these species.
News You Can Use - October 2

  • Mike Locander, from Rock Island
  • Mary Bunte, wife of Mike Drymiller and host mom to Halenka
  • Kathy Meyer, the mother of Junior Rotarian Megan Meyer

Halenka had a busy week. She participated in several MHS Homecoming events. This was all new to her. She rode in the Homecoming parade with the cross country team, attended the football game and went to the dance. While she was happy that MHS won the football game, she said it was too long for her. It’s more than a wedding in Belgium. There were a lot of pictures taken – Halenka thought all the posing was weird. :D  She also ran with the varsity cross country team on Saturday. It was hard but she was happy she did it and it was the first time she has ever had her name in the paper!

The fall cleanup will be held on Saturday, October 21st from 8:30 am until 10:30 am. All Rotarians, friends and family are invited. Please meet at the McDonalds on 16th street. The cleanup will take place on 16th street and 36th Avenue, near the McDonalds and Walgreens. Gloves, garbage bags and safety vests will be provided.

Dan Holland said that only a few people haven’t sent in their birdies pledge. Please do so as soon as possible so they can make their final distribution. You can contact Dan if you would like to confirm if your pledge was received.

Eric Trimble announced that Watermark Corners won the Forbes Main Street Award for best social media promotion. This is a huge honor for Barb and Amy Trimble. Watermark Corners is featured on Forbes.com and will appear in the December 12, 2017 issue of Forbes magazine.

Jen Kress announced that the iWireless Center is now the TaxSlayer Center. TaxSlayer is an online service that grew out of a family-owned company with 50 years in the tax preparation business. Jen said they are a fantastic family that love the area and are excited to do business in the Quad Cities.
