The SMILE for Monday, April 24, 2017 | Vol. 103 | No. 41

Editor: Jodie Corey Behrens   |  Webmaster: Jeff VanEchaute

A thought for the celebration of Earth Day (April 22nd): “The soil is the great connector of lives, the source and destination of all. It is the healer and restorer and resurrector, by which disease passes into health, age into youth, death into life. Without proper care for it we can have no community, because without proper care for it we can have no life.” Wendell Berry, the Unsettling of America: Culture and Agriculture
This Week
We are having a club social today! It might seem like Social Monday's are good days to miss, but let's not forget that one of the founding principals of Rotary is fellowship. The opening statement on the "About Rotary" page on Rotary.org states "Rotary is a global network of 1.2 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who come together to make positive, lasting change in communities at home and abroad." That lasting change begins at club meetings and building fellowship and trust among members. Plus, Geoff Manis and the Social Committee does a really, really great job of entertaining us on Social Monday's. We'll see you on Monday!

ps- Do you know about Rotary Fellowships?

Rotary Fellowships are groups of Rotarians, Rotarian spouses, and Rotaractors who join together to
  • share a common interest in worthwhile recreational activities (sports, hobbies, etc.);
  • further their vocational development through acquaintance with others of the same profession;
  • make new friends around the world;
  • explore a new opportunity for service;
  • and have fun and enhance their experience in Rotary.
There are at least 56 different Rotary Fellowships established today. We'll have flyers on the tables this Monday to give you a more in-depth introduction to the fellowships.

Last Week

We had the honor of having Dr. Bettie Truitt, President of Black Hawk College join us last Monday. Dr. Truitt provided an update on what's happening within the College including the Budget, the Art Program, and the Facilities Master Plan. She began her presentation by showing a three year review of the Budget and most notably, how the College's budget is impacted by the inconsistent funding from the State of Illinois. From FY 2016 to FY 2018, the College has had to decrease their dependence upon State funds and find ways to manage without. The College has done so successfully. Each year Dr. Truitt and her team have had to take a look at all expenses and determine what can be eliminated to help the College sustain. Two of the primary ways to save funds have been small but necessary tuition increases and layoffs of staff, primary within staff looking at retirement in the near future. Dr. Truitt pointed out that while the operating budget is tight, the College has the opportunity to expand on the buildings and make repairs and updates where needed due to the Bond investments (which are designated to be used for these purposes). The upcoming facilities upgrades include a Student Success Center (Q1), a Forensics Lab, and renovation to the East Side of the Moline campus. This remodel will help expand classroom sizes in building 3 and provide a larger front entrance, larger lobby, and additional classrooms in building 1. The third part of her presentation last Monday was the announcement that the Art Programs will stay. As mentioned, the budget considerations meant cutting back on two faculty members of the Art Department, but nonetheless, as Dr. Truitt has proven, Black Hawk College places value on the education they provide and aim to continue to offer high quality education at affordable prices to those who desire it. Arts included.

News You Can Use

Rotary Cleanup: The next Moline Rotary Community Cleanup event is tomorrow, Saturday April 22, 2017 (earth day), 8:30 am till 10:30 am. All Rotarians, family and friends are welcome. Please meet at McDonalds (1800 36th Ave, Moline, IL 61265) at 8:00 am for a hot cup of coffee. Cleanup will start at 8:30 am. Spring Cleanup gloves and garbage bags will be provided. Questions? Please contact Alan Anderson @ (309)781-5475 or aanderson@qcneca.com

Wine Raffles - next 5 weeks: Our Rotarians were so generous with donations of wine for the wine pull at the Murder Mystery Dinner that we still have quite a few bottles of wine left. Come prepared to part with $5 for a raffle ticket. The $5 raffle may win you 3 bottles of wine!

Birdies for Charity and the John Deere Classic: You may have noticed a recent flood of Birdies for Charity donation requests in your mail box this past couple of weeks. Don't forget that each year the Moline Rotary has our own Birdies program. This year funds from our Birdies donations will go to the Community Needs Committee. Please consider a donation. You may remember that every year, as a bonus from tournament proceeds, the John Deere Classic adds at least 5% on top of the pledges to participating charities. This could make a significant impact upon what our club is able to support this coming year. To make a pledge, simply fill out the yellow Birdies forms (they will be on the tables this Monday), and indicate whether you wish to make a pledge in a flat amount or an amount per birdie. You'll also have the chance to guess how many total birdies will be scored during the tournament, putting your name in a drawing for some great prizes from the JDC. Thank you for supporting the Moline Rotary Club Foundation!

Also, don't forget, the Moline Rotary Club has the honor of marshaling the 18th hole of the Classic every year. It is a tremendous undertaking, requiring many volunteers. If you are able to volunteer, please let us know. Historically we hope to have each person take on at least two shifts. Save the dates: July 10-16, 2017. A sign up sheet and more information to follow.
Correction: Your Secretary was so focused on getting the SMILE out to you last week that the dates were a mismatch of timelines. As you know, our meeting recaps in the last week's SMILE should have read April 10th and April 3rd not the 10th and 17th.

Smile a While

Oh Beautiful? (source: thoughtco.com)

Oh Beautiful for smoggy skies,
Insecticided grain,
For strip-mined mountain's majesty
Above the asphalt plain.
America, America,
Man sheds his waste on thee,
And hides the pines with billboard signs,
From sea to oily sea.

Okay, you're right... not funny. Let this not so funny idea of pollution be our final reminder this week to take care of our Earth and think of a thing or two we can do to help the environment (nudge, nudge, this Saturday the 22nd is clean-up day, see above).

The Four-Way Test: Of the things we think, say, or do: Is it the Truth? Is it Fair to all concerned? Will it build Good Will and Better Friendships? Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?
