It is a restricted access nation within a nation.
Along with a friend from Bangladesh who is from the area, Carolyn founded a non - Profit organization in January 2017 called CLAP (Canadian Leadership Assistance Program, now registered society in Canada) for fund raising purposes in support of the Chittagong Hill Tracts project. The organization has a Canadian Board of Directors (6 Canadians and our Executive Director who is from the Chittagong Hill).
Carolyn Huston is a Recreational Therapist and Support Worker at The Brain Injury Society in Penticton. Mar. 06, 2018 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Join us for weekly Rotary meeting taking place on Tuesday, March 6th, at 6:00 pm at Second Home Restaurant (formerly Santorini's Restaurant) in Summerland. Details as follows:
SET-UP: Michael Zang
GREETER: Brenda Hamilton
50/50: Bob Hamilton
ROTARY MOMENT: Garry Hollingshead
SPEAKER: Dr. Vilas Prahbu and Murli Pendharkar - Project in India
About Dr. Vilas Prahbu Vilas was born in Pune India. He is married to Medha Prabhu, a physiotherapist, and they have one son, Meyash Talent, who is an agent in Hollywood. Vilas trained s a medical doctor in Mumbai. He received a commonwealth scholarship and went to the United Kingdom for further training. He is trained as an Ear, Nose and Throat surgeon and started working as a specialist in South Wales. He then spent 3 years in Saudi Arabia as a consultant prior to relocating to Canada in January 1990. He worked as an Assistant professor at the Health Sciences Centre & Childrens hospital in Winnipeg. In 1996, he and his wife moved to Summerland to work at the Penticton Regional Hospital. He worked there in the position of Chief of Surgery. He has supported Rotary in various charitable projects, especially in distributing used equipment from Interior Health to poor areas in different parts of the word such as Myanmar and Haiti. About Murli Pendharkar Murli Pendharkar was born, raised, and educated (B. Sc., B. Ed) in India and later in Canada (B. Ed., M. Ed. Degrees from Toronto). Murli and his wife Sudha went to Tanzania in 1954, where he worked as a Math/ Science teacher for Govt. run Indian secondary schools. Murli was in Tanzania for 7 years and in 1961 immigrated to Canada (Luseland, Sask.) as a Math/Science teacher. Murli was appointed Principal (Luseland, Sask.), and later a Superintendent of schools in BC. He joined the Rotary Club in Kelowna in 1978. He retired from his professional career in 1987, and set out to accomplish his life’s goal by contributing his time to volunteer for a cause: Red Cross, Society for the mentally handicapped, Rotary, a three term School Trustee; and appointed chairman of the Health Board. For the Rotary Murli held several positions at the district level through the years. One of his many accomplishments was to ship six 40ft container loads of used medical equipment to Uganda, Guinea, Mynamar & the Philippines. Murli is married to Sudha and they have three children and six grandchildren. Murli celebrated his 88th birthday in February 2018, and proposes to retire within six months. He is the ideal Rotarian with his many years of service. Although we have Preston Mott as our supreme Rotarian, Murli has 40 years of Rotary Service under his sleeve. We should all be very grateful for having people like Murli among our minds. The Project: The project that will be presented on our March 6 evening meeting is a rather unique one. It concerns the Miraj Highschool in India which is in dire condition on all fronts. Not only the building needs a lot of work but also school supplies are needed for the educational program. Dr. Vilas Prabhu grew up there and went to this school as a young child. So, he knows it very well. The school is located some 25 kms from Ichalkaranjiin India, which in turn is some 300km SE of Mumbai. The Rotary Club of Ichalkaranjiin has already shown interest to be the local partner and host club for the Miraj Highschool improvement project. We are in contact with Rotarian Mr. Agrawal who is the Global Grant Chairman for the Rotary there. His club has done quite a number of school projects before and hence is bringing critically needed experience to the table! COST: $20/person - includes dinner, dessert and coffee/tea GUESTS: Guests are always welcome to attend! If you are interested in learning more about Rotary or becoming a member of our club, please contact our Secretary, Don Gemmell, at don_gemmell@yahoo.com to RSVP. Mar. 24, 2018 8:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
We're happy to announce that another Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) course will be taking place this spring (March 24, April 7, April 21). For those that don't know, RLI is a 3 day program designed to give participants more information about Rotary, how to create and carry out more effective community programs, and to build friendships across the clubs in our district. Though the curriculum is designed with the idea that participants will take days 1, 2 &3 in order, that's not 100% necessary, so if you're not able to make all 3 courses this spring, you can attend another RLI session in the future to graduate. RLI is often paid for by your club, so ask if you're not sure.
When: March 24, April 7, April 21
Where: The Coast Capri Hotel (1171 Harvey Ave, Kelowna)
Why: To build friendships and acquire knowledge about Rotary.
Who: All Rotarians, no matter how long they've been in Rotary.
How much: To help cover costs, RLI costs $85 per person per day. The district is currently covering half the fees, so 1 day is $42.50, 2 days are $85.00, and 3 days are $127.50. Payments can be made either by credit card or cheque**
**SUMMERLAND ROTARY CLUB MEMBERS**
Please note the cost of attending these sessions will be 100% covered by our Club. Please speak to Treasurer, Doug Carnegie, about payment for these courses.
Thank you to those Rotarians who have already registered their spot at the upcoming RLI courses. Currently, from our Club, we have Megan McLeod who has registered her participation to attend all three courses. Haven't signed up yet but would like to? Don't worry - there are still spots available!
